This paper describes the results of experimental study on thermal properties and strength developments of mass concrete substituting fly-ash for cement less than 45%. We obtained the following results. 1. By using fly-ash to mass concrete, the temperature of concrete could be lower than that of non fly-ash concrete. 2. Using fly-ash to mass concrete could be more workability of concrete. 3. The compressive strength of core test piece of mass concrete substituting fly-ash for 45% cement could be not lower than that of the test piece by standard cure.

Direct tensile and flexural tests on polypropylene short-fiber reinforced cementitious composites were executed. Thereafter a stochastic study was performed to investigate the effect of the specimen size on its tensile strength. The results are: 1. Size-effect in the tensile strength was clarified and the tendency was described by a function. 2. An extrapolation to 5.31mm^3 in volume of direct tension specimen showed the same tensile strength as flexural strength of tested beams, which suggests direct tensile strength and flexural strength of the specimen are directly correlated to each other.

The reinforced concrete (RC) column under horizontal load generally fails by bending or shear force. The shear fracture should be avoided in structural design because of its brittle behavior. However, the mechanism of shear fracture is not enough clear. In this paper, in order to investigate the effect of confinement by hoop on the shear deformation behavior of RC column, the simulation of the confined concrete under horizontal load was carried out by using a visco-elasto-plastic suspension element method (VEPSEM) which can dynamically simulate the fracture behavior of concrete with a non-continuum model. As the results, it is shown that the effect of hoops on the shear deformation behavior of confined concrete and the change from the bending fracture to the shear fracture by increasing axial stress can be expressed qualitatively by this analytical method.

Adhesive strength between epoxy resin floor coatings and cement mortar substrate is evaluated. Adhesive strength is constructed from specific adhesion and mechanical adhesion. First they are individually studied as the peel energy. Secondly in order to unify them , a mathematical equation that consists of work of adhesion and surface roughness, both of which can be measured experimentally , is proposed . By comparing the results calculated and measured , availability of the equation is discussed.

This paper presents parametric studies to obtain inelastic dynamic response characteristics of torsionally unbalanced multi-story models. The following four models are analyzed; 1) models with unbalanced mass, 2) models with unbalanced shear-strength, 3) models with unbalanced stiffness and 4) models with unbalanced shear-strength and stiffness. Major findings are as follows: (1) the total energy input is constant; (2) the energy input causing damages is constant if the shear-strength of models is constant; and (3) the damage concentration can be estimated by the first eigen mode and by the deviation of the yield shear force from the optimum one.

The eccentric arrangement of shear walls in wooden houses is proved to be one of the important factors for their seismic damage. An eccentricity ratio is a good index to avoid unbalanced distribution of shear walls. It is pointed out that the eccentricity starts to affect the seismic performance when it exceeds 0.15. However, plenty of wooden houses with eccentricity ratios larger than 0.15 exist out there so that we have observed plenty of houses collapsed due to their eccentricity during the Hyogo-ken Nambu earthquake. The authors examine here the influence of the eccentric arrangement of shear walls on seismic performance of wooden houses. By dynamic nonlinear response analyses of two-storied conventional wood-framed houses by step-by-step procedure the authors simulate their behavior with unbalanced distribution of shear walls. They found that the penalty function for eccentricity on the ultimate strength in the current guideline does not have sufficient safety margin.

This paper describes a theoretical study concerning soil-structure dynamic interaction problems on an alluvial medium. The dynamic interaction of a poroelastic half space is investigated using an analytical model based on aggregate theory. The following results have been obtaind in this study, (1) Dynamical Poisson's ratios of grounds with high-water level depend upon coefficients of permeability and frequency of vibratory force. (2) Difference of results for vertical excitement between two boundary conditions on permeability is much larger than one for horizontal excitement. (3) Dynamical Poisson's ratio of water-saturated ground with high permeability such as sandy soil ground nearly equals to one of soil skeleton itself without water. (4) Dynamical Poisson's ratio of water-saturated ground with low permeability such as clay ground nearly equals to 0.5. (5) The model that consists of porous elastic body and pore water could examine complex dynamical interaction mechanism between porous elastic body and pore water by surveying permeability coefficient and porosity, Poisson's ratio and velocity of shear wave on real soil ground.

This paper presents a simulation scheme suitable for a sub-structure pseudo-dynamic test on a planar flexible steel frame following a bending-shear type interaction. Nodal displacement or force components are classified into two categories: one is a condensed vibration component subject to dynamic loading, and the other is a dependent component subject to quasi-static force constraint. The vibration components are solved by an explicit integration scheme of central finite difference, where an expression in modal coordinates is adopted in an attempt to omit unstable responses of high-frequency modes. The dependent components are solved by a scheme to correct the force imbalance due to various non-linearity. In this scheme an appropriate control is run simultaneously with the specimen, and its behavior is used to extrapolate the specimen's restoring force. This scheme is successfully applied to the hybrid simulation on a 2-story steel frame with semi-rigid partial-strength joints.

In our previous work we extracted statistical characteristics of seismic ground motions from K-net records of 25 earthquakes observed at 142 stations in the Kyushu region in order to establish the synthesis method of statistical Green's functions. In this paper we study the strong motion prediction method using these statistical Green's functions. First, we apply this method to the Kagoshima-ken Hokuseibu earthquake of March 26, 1997 and compare the synthetics with the observed. Second, we simulate strong motions at the bedrock level during the Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake of 1995. Synthetic waveforms based on this method match quite well with the observed. Thus it is proved that we can predict the bedrock motions using our statistical Green's function if we properly express the source model. Finally we applied this method to predict strong motions in Fukuoka City for a hypothesized Fukuoka earthquake. First strong motions at the bedrock level are predicted and then the strong motions at the ground surface are obtained by the 1-D wave propagation theory. The peak ground velocity thus estimated reaches 100 cm/s, which is less than Kobe.

Damage statistics for the 1923 Kanto Earthquake have been compiled and investigated focussing on Tokyo City. The inconsistency among the statistics was found to depend on whether collapsed buildings were burned down or not, and on the deference in numbers between buildings and households due to existence of multi-family dwellings. The damage distribution evaluated by these data suggested the effect of surface ground condition. The seismic intensity in JMA scale was estimated to be 6+ in the low land delta of Sumida River and 5+ on the diluvial plateaus. The relationship between overturning acceleration of tombstones and collapse rate of wooden houses was consistent with the normal distribution functions obtained in another Kanto area by Mononobe and Miyano.

A cutting pattern optimization method is presented for a frame-supported membrane structure by considering boundary shape and stress ratio as design parameters. The objective function is the deviation of the stresses from the target distribution. The cutting pattern optimization problem is divided into two steps of linear estimation of equilibrium shape and modification of cutting patterns so as to satisfy the linearized optimality conditions for minimizing the stress deviation, where the increments of stresses are expressed as linear functions of the cutting pattern. This way, equilibrium shape, cutting pattern, and initial stress are optimized simultaneously by successively solving linear equations.

A finite element analysis method is proposed for finding the symmetry limit and the in-plane limit of space frames subjected to cyclic horizontal displacement. Analyses are performed for two types of one-story space frames based on the proposed method. As a result of the analyses, displacement amplitudes and bifurcation modes of the in-plane limit and the symmetry limit are obtained, respectively. Accuracy of those limits is verified by hysteretic response analyses for the frames.

Hybrid structures consisting of cable, membrane and rigid members are examined in the present paper. Kinematic equations and equilibrium equations for cable element, rigid structure and membrane element are formulated by means of generalized inverse method. The freedom of rigid structure is considered by the displacements of its nodes so that the relationship of the displacements of nodes is obtained from its kinematic equation. By regarding the rigid structures as constraint conditions of displacements using their kinematic equations, structural analysis scheme is proposed for static and dynamic analysis as well as shape finding analysis. The method for self-equilibrated stress analysis is also developed for hybrid structures where membrane stress is taken into consideration. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Adopting two curvature variation expressions for a circular arch, we derive their shape functions that are general solutions of linear static problems. Using the shape functions, we construct stiffness matrices and mass matrices of arch elements. The stiffness matrices allow us to get analytical solution of elastic systems with the elements. Applying the finite element methods to analyze natural frequencies analyses of ring with various parameters, we examine and demonstrate present new discretizing methods, which give us precise solutions. All the solutions analyzed here are compared with those obtained by some methods with typical well-known shape functions.

It has been pointed out in recent studies that the bond design for the double layer reinforcement as indicated in the past is not adequate. At the present, however, as enough test data has not been accumulated a rational design method regarding the double layer reinforcement is yet to be determined. A bond test using the simple beam type specimen was executed in which the outer layer reinforcement number, the transverse reinforcement ratio and the bar arrangement of the transverse reinforcement were selected as parameter. As a result, it was found that the influence of the outer layer reinforcement, regarding the bond splitting strength to inner layer reinforcement, is not too large if the main reinforcement bars number of outer layers is more than that of the inner layers. Based on the consideration that the inner layer reinforcement was restrained in the vertical direction by the bond stress of outer layer reinforcement, the previous bond splitting strength equation was revised. The derived equation showed good agreement with the previous experimental results.

This paper presented the results of tests which were conducted to investigate the influence of the mechanical property and the charpy absorbed energy at 0℃ (vEO) on deformation capacity of beam to column welded connection. Cyclic loading tests, which experimental parameters were kinds of steel materials and beam-ends detail (which were the scallop method and non-scallop method), were carried out. The conclusion of this study can be summarized as follows; 1) The deformation capacity of beam to column welded connection is influenced by the mechanical property of the beam flange. 2) When the vEO of fracture starting point was more than 130J, the deformation capacity was not influenced by the fracture toughness. 3) Though the specimen of Non-scallop method was superior to the scallop one, in comparison with the estimation of material property, the effect of the beam-ends was small.

Several similar frames or bents are connected in a single line by a flexible floor or roof system in steel industrial buildings such as a thermal power plant. Vertical braces are often added to the frames or bents as earthquake resisting elements, but they are sometimes not located uniformly due to the circumstances of building use, and this causes considerable eccentricity between centers of mass and stiffness and/or resistance. First, this paper presents an analytical model suitable for inelastic response analysis of such a type of building structure, where not only shear deformation of each floor but also an overall rigid-body rotation of floor system can be considered. Second, a substructure on-line test system is used to simulate inelastic response such a building. Numerical analysis using hysteresis models and an equivalent linear analysis are carried out. The analysis results are compared with the results of substructure on-line test.

In case of point symmetric Z-section beam, major axis is different from web axis. When the moment acts on web axis, torsional deformation occurs from the beginning and the strength is lower than critical buckling strength of the beam. In this paper, uniform tests of Z-section beams is carried out and their flexural torsional behavior is investigated. Next, we carried out numerical analysis and clarified the relation between the position of moment axis and the maximum strength. The flexural torsional behavior and the strength of Z-section beams are similar to those of channel section beams.

This paper reports on the experimental studies on the durability of galvanized light-gauge steel shapes with thickness up to 1.6 mm, inclusive of the screw connections. The durability of the shapes and screw connections were examined by combined cyclic accelerated corrosion tests and shear tests on corroded connections. The test results show that aluminum zinc-alloy-coated shapes are superior in durability to conventional galvanized shapes, that the shear strength of screw connections is not reduced after the shapes reached to full red rust conditions. Thus, according to these test results, the durability of galvanized light-gauge steel shapes was clarified.

Cantilever beam-columns of square CFT and steel hollow section were tested under the constant axial and alternately repeated horizontal loads in order to investigate the strength deterioration phenomena due to local buckling. The effect of width-to-thickness ratio of steel tube, axial load ratio and the displacement amplitude in the repeated loading on the strength deterioration and the energy dissipation capacity are discussed.

Relatively high rise buildings are often constructed using steel encased reinforced concrete (SRO members. The deformation capacity of the building is a key factor to avoid the collapse of the building. In Japanese regulation, this contribution is counted as Ds-value. However, the research works to estimate D* value of SRC buildings are rare. In this paper, data of ultimate deformation angles of SRC members are examined and D= values of SRC buildings are estimated modifying Prof. Akiyama's proposal which takes account of energy input of an earthquake and energy concentration in a multi-story building. A cycle of repetition with the amplitude of limit deformation during earthquake is assumed to follow the proposal. Key parameters such as axial force ratio, steel strength ratio and shear strength ratio of beams or columns are presented to satisfy each D* value of a SRC building. Calculated results are examined comparing with the damages of the SRC buildings which experienced Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake.
