This paper presents a simplified data fitting model to predict drying shrinkage 6f concrete, based on about 900 drying shrinkage data accumulated in Japan. The model is consisted of 5 factors; unit water content, unit cement content, relative humidity, volume-surface ratio of member and age at drying. The correlation of these factors was determined by the least square method. The accuracy of this model was verified through comparisons to previous models, such as CEB-FIP 1978, 1990, ACI 209 and JSCE. It was found that the model was quite effective for predicting the drying shrinkage of concrete. This model might be improved by accumulating more data concerned with mechanical properties of aggregate and size effects of concrete members etc.

This paper is intended to quantify the crack formation condition when cracks occur over horizontal reinforcing bars by the subsidence of concrete. The subsidence tests of a concrete specimen in which a reinforcing bar was suspended from the fixed crosshead of a test machine with a piano wire were conducted by employing experimental parameters such as loading ages, concrete cover, loading speed and effect of aggregate. As a result, it was made clear that the rate of subsidence of concrete when cracking occurs at the surface of concrete is approximately 0.67mm at 3hours ages and that it decreases suddenly and is approximately 0.06mm at 6hours ages. Using a finite element method to predict stress and strain state in the specimens for the case in which cracks may occur along horizontal reinforcing bars,numerical analysis was done.The local stress and the strain value predicted from a quantity of subsidence rate and load in crack formation obtained from this experiment agreed with previous experiment results.

High performance short fiber reinforced cementitious composites, named as engineered cementitious composite (ECC), have been realized with reaching several percent of tensile strain capacity. The scope of this study is to establish practical design guidelines for ECC based on micromechanics. These guidelines were set in terms of newly proposed performance indices, stress index and energy index. Uniaxial tensile test data adopting five different ECCs showed these indices successfully express saturation degree of multiple cracking, which enable us to predict the tensile strain capacity of ECCs. As a result, one can design ECC so as to achieve fully saturated multiple cracking and high strain capacity by controlling the performance indices.

Thermal conductivity of concrete is influenced strong to the quality of component materials for mix proportions. This paper was investigated the analysis method for thermal conductivity of concrete by maltu-phase equivalent inclusion model. And the efficiency of this analysis method was compared with studies of the past (the experimental study and the Campbell's theory). According to the results, there were clarified: 1) this analysis method consisted with values of the experimental study; 2) this analysis method was better than the Campbell's theory.

The experiment on creep behavior of high-strength concrete in early age was carried out in this study. The creep behavior in early age was evaluated by Burgers model, which rheological elements ware changed by time. The following results were clarified: 1)The ratio of tensile creep to compressive creep was about 65-90% in drying condition and sealed condition. 2)The ratio of sealed condition to drying condition was about 1.1-1.6 in tensile creep and compressive creep. 3) The creep behavior in early age was estimated by Burgers model which rheological elements ware changed by time.

In the production of porous concrete, it was confirmed that the flowability of the cement paste is stabilized by mixing for more than 270 seconds irrespective of the kind of chemical admixture. However, the use of superplasticizer influences water cement ratio and compressive strength which is suitable for porous concrete. In the compaction by surface vibrator for porous concrete, there was a difference of about 10% of void ratio between the upper and lower layers. It became clear that a suitable flow value for optimum performance of porous concrete is influenced by the value of a designed void ratio. The compressive strength of porous concrete is able to be estimated by the void ratio and the compressive strength of concrete without void when same binder is used.

Daily range of black panel temperature(BPT) is an index of the thermal-mechanical deterioration of exterior building materials. The daily maximum/minimum BPT exposed outdoors at horizontal (backside opened/insulated), south/30 deg. South/90 deg. And north/90 deg. At Tsukuba(36° 07′ 36″ N, 140° 04′ 39″ E) was monitored for three years and was expressed as function of ambient temperature, wind speed/direction, solar radiation and relative humidity. Introducing the Japan Meteorological Agency's data observed around Japan, the averaged daily range between maximum and minimum BPT was estimated to be plotted on the map.

This paper presents the relationship between the caster vibration and the configuration of real floors that have regular and continuous unevenness from the viewpoint of trouble to humans. First, we measured the vibration of the special caster and a wheelchair, and showed the correlation. Next, we carried out sensory tests about feeling during movement. Consequently, we showed that feeling during movement is influenced by vertical acceleration. Finally, we determined the factors that affect vertical acceleration and feeling during movement. They were influenced by the width of the joint and the edge width of each floor material.

We have studied the causes of systematic errors in the phase velocities evaluated by the space autocorrelation method (SAC) using the data sets obtained about 200m away from a road heavy with traffic. A method of Henstridge was applied to the data sets. It reveals that the dispersion curves of Henstridge do not depend on the intensity of microtremors, providing proper estimates. This fact suggests that the microtremors arriving from different directions are strongly correlated, for example, due to reflection. The directional informations analyzed by both the method of Henstrdge and a frequency-wavenumber method also support this suggestion.

The knowledge about the condition of the ground is crucial when considering earthquake disaster mitigation. However, collecting information on the ground condition over a wide area is not an easy task. In order to address this issue, the authors have looked at the fact that the land use is closely related to the soil condition and micro topography. The objective of this paper is to investigate an approach to infer the ground and landform conditions based on the land use and its change. The authors have already examined the method in which detailed digital land use information was used. In this paper, a new approach where satellite (Landsat/TM) data are effectively used to identify land use is discussed.

It is investigated that influence of rotational foundation input motion due to Rayleigh wave on the transfer function estimation of low-rise R. C. buildings. The discussion is based on the vibration tests on four low-rise R.C. buildings that have same foundation type, shape of plan and structural condition with different height. Microtremor observation was made with and without traffic vibration. Earthquake response is also observed and compared with microtremor case. The result shows that the transfer function estimation of low-rise R.C. buildings is affected by the rotational foundation input motion due to Rayleigh wave. The general feature observed of transfer function is confirmed by sway-rocking model subjected to Rayleigh wave.

This study investigates the amplification of ground motions in 2D basin edge structure with a vertical bedrock-sediment discontinuity using a simple and realistic subsurface structure for the vertical SV wave incidence. In the case of simple basin edge structure used here, the ground motion amplification near the basin edge can be recognized when the Ricker wavelets with higher normalized characteristic periods than 0.8 act as a vertically incident S-wave. The wave induced at the bedrock-sediment discontinuity is decomposed into surface waves to make clear mechanism of the constructive interference of the ground motion adjacent to the basin edge. The higher modes of Rayleigh waves make great contribution to the constructive interference with the direct S-wave, propagating vertically upwards. In the case of the 1995 Kobe earthquake, the second higher mode is largely induced at the bedrock-sediment discontinuity and contributes to the constructive interference, which caused "heavily damaged belt zone".

We tried to model a three-dimensional (3-D) basin structure in the north of the Osaka basin using recordings at 8 sites of the earthquake event of M_<JMA>=5.4 that occurred at 7:38 on 17 January 1995. A construction procedure is as follows. We at first made an initial 3-D basin model of the region from the results of geophysical explorations and geological surveys as well as the source model inverted from waveforms of body wave portion by the genetic algorithm. Then, accounting for existing information of the surface geology and the explorations, we iteratively revised the model by decreasing the difference of later arrivals between calculated and recorded earthquake motions. The model derived by this procedure well explained not only body wave portions at all the sites but also later arrivals except for two sites. This result indicates that a reliable 3-D basin model is possible to construct using recordings of small to moderate size earthquake events, if an initial 3-D basin model is existed.

This paper discusses performance evaluation of buckling-restrained braces on a damage controlled structure by numerical analysis using two dimensional FEM model. Strains at beam-ends on the damage controlled structure are examined. Ductility factors, cumulative ductility factors, energy absorption ratios, and fatigue properties of the buckling-restrained braces are investigated from the analytical viewpoint. Tension and compression cyclic loading tests of the buckling-restrained braces are analyzed. Finally, seven types of the buckling-restrained braces are totally evaluated.

Evolutionary Structural Optimization (ESO) method is one of the most powerful and promising technique for pursuing the optimal structural form among the other methods as the homogenization design technique and the bubble method. Although it is easy to carry out the calculation of ESO, there have been remained some weak points in its evolutionary process, by which inefficiency of calculation is caused or unreasonable solutions are concluded. A new method through the usage of the contour lines is proposed in order to remove such defects of the usual ESO as well as to enable the structures to not only be scraped off but also grow up toward the final optimal structures. Numerical examples on the structural form creation for plane structures subjected to multiple loadings as well as shell structures are demonstrated so as to show the potential ability of the present method toward effective structural design tools.

The purpose of this paper is to grasp the elasto-plastic dynamic buckling behavior of rigidly jointed single layer lattice domes under the simple single pulse waves analytically. The analysis model is the rigidly jointed single layer lattice dome which has a hexagonal plan. The input waveforms are a rectangular pulse, a half-sine pulse, a triangle pulse and a step. Method of the analysis is a dynamic response analysis which takes into account the geometrical and material nonlinearities. Based on the results, we make clear the effects of input waveform, the duration of the shock and the half subtended member angle of the dome on the buckling behavior, and we examine the collapse acceleration of the dome.

Generally, L-shaped shear walls are used in the RC structures. Until now, there were not many studies on the analysis method considering non-planar shear wall sections, such as L, T, U, etc.. According to the research of authors, the behavior of L-shaped shear walls is completely different from that of the plane wall. Therefore, the analysis neglecting the continuity of an orthogonal wall is unsuitable. We proposed the elastic analysis method considering the interaction between two wall panels within the L-shaped shear wall. Its elastic analysis has been developed into the inelastic analysis method for independent L-shaped shear walls. In this paper, the numerical model for inelastic analysis of a three-dimensional frame including L-shaped shear walls is reconstructed based on this inelastic analysis method, and the constitutive equations is induced.

This paper describes compressive and shear tests on specimens in which the lateral prestress are introduced by the transverse reinforcement of a reinforced concrete column. In reinforced concrete structures, the columns which are subjected to axial force develop a three-dimensional compressive stress condition, if it is possible to confine the core concrete laterally by introducing prestress with transverse reinforcement, then it is considered that the compressive strength is improved. From the compressive or shearing tests of reinforced short columns in which the prestress is introduced to lateral side by transverse hoops, the following facts are indicated. 1) The lateral prestress introduced by the transverse reinforcement is a very effective method for improving the compressive or shear strength. 2) In shear strength formula, the new idea which introduces the confined effect on concrete is possible.

This paper presents the results of tests on five types of beam-to-column connections. Increasing use is being made of haunched and non uniform end connections to move the plastic hinge away from column, where construction deficiencies can cause premature fracture. All five connection types tested successfully prevented premature rupture by neutralizing the negative effect of weld access holes, and exhibited large deformation capacity. However their maximum strength and plastic deformation capacity are attributed to the fracture toughness and the crystallinity of the beam materials and welds.

In designing of tubular steel trussed towers, fatigue performance against wind loads needs to be evaluated. Here, a fatigue design method is proposed together with its design conditions. To this end, fatigue tests were carried out and the resultant stresses and strains around fatigue cracks were evaluated. As results: (i) no influence on the number of load repetitions for cracks and failures is recognized after removing residual stresses during galvanizing or annealing, (ii) fatigue performance within the hot spot strain is found to be equivalent to that by load amplitude for yield strength and thus, its application to tubular members stiffened by ring-stiffeners is practically possible.
