This report is the result of cracking of concrete in-place which was cast on the subgradesi conpacted sand fill styrene form polyethylene sheet excelsior board plywood steel sheet concrete sub-slab so on. The concrete slabs were cast under the hot and sunny day in sunnier. When concrete was cast on the pervious base (sand), the shrinkage cracking did not occurred. On impervious base, especially adherent one (steel sheet) to concrete an excessive amounts of cracking occurred. But on the impervious base cracking didn't always occur, and the shrinkage cracking seems to depend on the slab size; its area and thickness.

The sampling of small size concrete cores which diameters are from 18 to 25mm from RC structure gives only a little damage to the structure. Therefore small size cores can be sampled from main structural members such as columns and beams. In the present paper, the population mean and variance of strength gap between small size cores and standard size cores which are 100mm in diameter and 200mm in height are discussed, and the formulas for estimating the strength of concrete in RC structures are determined. Furthermore, the estimating method is applied to actual structures and the adequacy is considered.

This report describes two methods for determining the compressive strength of high-strength concrete subjected to high-temperature heating. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The compressive strength of high-strength concrete subjected to high-temperature heating can be determined from heating temperature and compressive strength at 28 days. 2. The compressive strength of high-strength concrete after heating can be determined from pore volume rate and compressive strength at 20℃. 3. Two strength equations based on an experimental result were proposed by making heating temperature a parameter, and this verified that experiment values and correlation were good.

The purpose of the experiments in this paper is to clarify the physical and dynamic properties of the artificial light-weight aggregate concrete exposed during 33 years, from 1968 to 2001. Durability performance was examined from the tests of strength, neutralization, X-ray diffraction and internal crack observation, etc. It became clear that the light-weight concrete specimens showed the outstanding quality, equivalent or more than normal weight concrete from a viewpoint of durability. The performance data of the artificial light-weight aggregate concrete obtained from this research turns into precious data of long-term durability evaluation of light-weight concrete and is useful also to stock management of the existing buildings.

Waste wood-waste expanded polystyrene composites are made on different hot press molding conditions, and tested for apparent density, water absorption, expansion in thickness and flexural strength. From the test results, regardless of molding temperature and molding time, the apparent density of the composites is increased with an increase in the molding pressure, while their water absorption is decreased with an increase in the molding pressure. The flexural strength of the composites is markedly increased with increasing molding pressure, molding temperature and molding time, and tends to become nearly constant at a molding temperature of 120℃ and a molding time of 15min.

In the 2000 Tottori-ken Seibu earthquake, many strong ground motions of the main-shock and the aftershocks have been observed at a lot of stations including near-source area. In this study, we attempted to construct a source model for broad-band strong ground motions by the forward modeling using the empirical Green's function method. We derived the best source model that consists of two asperities and background after several trials referring to the inverted source model by Sekiguchi and Iwata (2001). Two asperities are located in shallow and deep parts at the southeastern side of the hypocenter. We found that strong ground motions at near-source area were controlled by the areas and stress drops of two asperities. Relation between combined area of asperities and seismic moment of the best source model is in close agreement with the empirical relation by Somerville et al. (1999).

Part 2 proposes nonlinear constitutive rule for the viscoelastic material subjected to the earthquake-like short-duration loading. It is based on the fractional time-derivatives of the stress and strain, and is an extension of the linear rule proposed in Part 1. In order to model the complex interactions among temperature, frequency, and strain sensitivities, the rule considers both heat-oriented nonlinearity and strain-oriented nonlinearity: It updates stiffness and damping step-by-step according to the material temperature-rise caused by energy dissipation, as well as maximum strain and maximum strain-rate developed in the previous steps. The rule is reasonably accurate over the wide ranges of temperature 0℃ to 40℃, frequency 0.1 Hz to 3 Hz, and peak shear strain 10% to 300%.

The dynamic characteristics of earth pressures during earthquakes that have been observed on the lateral sides of an embedded large-scale-shaking-table foundation are studied The observed results have shown that the earth pressures on the opposite sides of the foundation were generated in phase for relatively lower frequencies and tend to be out of phase for higher frequencies It was also detected that the earth pressures on the lateral sides of the foundation were strongly related to the horizontal velocity motions of the foundation for relatively lower frequencies and to the acceleration motions for higher frequencies The analyses for the earth pressures were conducted by use of a simple lumped-mass-system equivalently replaced for the lateral soil of two surface layers Fairly good agreement between the analyses and the observed results was presented

The earthquake strong motion arrived from seismic fault via propagating in bedrock and local site. The adequate 3-dimentional dynamic analytical method is required in order to evaluate the seismic risk for the coming large earthquake. The development of computer technology makes it possible to carry out the dynamic analysis of huge 3-dimentional soil model. The finite element method (FEM) applied to space discrete and explicit method applied to time integration is useful. The FEM can represents soil irregularity more rigorous but expense longer computational time. This paper describes the method of FEM and explicit time integration considering multi volumes with variable mesh size and integral time increment. The proposed method demonstrates good computational performance for dynamic analyses of large 3-dimentional soil model. The prediction analyses for earthquake motions in Osaka area during hypothetical Tokai-Nankai earthquake is shown.

Re-evaluation of near-field ground motion on the past disastrous in-land shallow earthquakes is one of the most important issues in earthquake engineering. In this study, the characteristics of the strong motion during the 1948 Fukui earthquake are investigated using the strong motion simulation technique. The hybrid simulation technique, which combines a 3D finite difference method and a stochastic Green function synthesis method, is performed for the Fukui earthquake, referring to the re-estimated ground motion intensity from the damage data. The source parameters of the Fukui earthquake proposed by Irikura and Kamae(1999) are modified in order for better fitting of the simulation results with the re-estimated ground motion intensity distribution. The results show that simulated near-field ground motions have large amplitude with period of 1 to 2 seconds due to the combination of the effects of the source and the soil amplification.

A convenient method is proposed for estimating base-isolated-tall-building responses to strong winds, which comprise slowly- and quickly- varying components Experimental results for a lead-plugged rubber bearing (LRB) subjected to four types of ideal wind loads show that the LRB brings one-side horizontal deformation with fluctuation, accompanied with creep and re-crystallizations of LRB's lead portion To estimate such deformation, the proposed method assumes that only rubber portion is burden with the slowly-varying loads, the lead portion cannot resist slowly-varying loads but has influence of quickly-varying components, and simple sum of both brings peak deformation Thus, wind loads are first decomposed to slowly- and quickly-varying components Next, deformations to each component are computed by static and dynamic analyses, respectively Then, their sum is taken as peak deformation Analyses for an assumed tall building with the LRBs show that the estimated deformation must be misesteem unless creep deformation due to slowly-varying components is incorporated

Under the Osaka bay area, there exist 13 marine clayey strata which are numbered as Mal3(the shallowest) to MaO(the deepest) In the case of general buildings the compressibility of the Mal3 is often taken into account for settlement problems But for the case of great or heavy buildings, not only the Mal3 but also other strata should be considered for settlement problems Thus it is important to obtain the compressibility for general reclaimed area, where consolidation test using the soil samples in general has to be carried out including extracting undisturbed soil samples that requires much labor and expense This test includes extracting undisturbed soil samples requires much labor and expense Instead of the complicated consolidation test, in this paper a formula for compressibility has been presented using simple test by undisturbed samples that only relates with void-ratio and effective pressure Using the soil samples around Kansai airport island, the compressibility have been obtained statistically The results from the formula and from the test are nearly same, which clearly indicates that the formula is suitable for simple settlement predications.

In order to evaluate the shear modulus ratio〜shear strain (G/Go〜γ) and hysteresis damping ratio〜shear strain (h〜γ) relations at large strain level, test results from a series of undramed cyclic deformation test and undramed cyclic strength test on undisturbed sand and gravel samples obtained by in-situ freezing method were reviewed Following were concluded (1) G/Go〜γ and h〜γ correlation from undramed cyclic strength test is basically corresponding to that obtained from undramed cyclic deformation test (2) In the range of strain level larger than 01%, the effect of confining stress or relative density on the G/Co〜γ and h〜γ relations at large strain level is slight (3) The deformation characteristics at large strain level used for equivalent linear analysis was evaluated with the normalized N value (Na) The response acceleration, obtained from equivalent linear analysis with the deformation characteristics proposed in this study, comparatively agreed with the observed record in Port Island during the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake.

In this study, the authors work out theoretical analysis of mechanical behavior of an RC earth retaining structure by. the Sakauchi method. In this case, the deflection and the bending moment of the structure, especially at the final stage of excavation, are supposed to be very large, as the final excavation depth is so deep as 27.5m. Therefore, we reinforce the lowest strut (slab) with an RC beam of non-uniform section or with a diagonal steel beam (composite beam), so that they may suppress these quantities at the final excavation. From these results, we conclude that an RC or a composite beam will restrain remarkably the wall rotation, thereby, decreasing the deformation of the wall.

This paper proposes use of viscoelastic dampers to a dome structure as one of possible passive control schemes for a space frame, and clarifies the relationship between the response characteristics and seismic input. Good control performance is demonstrated via time-history analysis of a member-by-member model, using an accurate fractional derivative constitutive rule that simulates frequency-sensitivity of the dampers. For a detailed and mode-based analysis of the response characteristics, a so-called global damping model of the frame is also introduced. Effects of damping ratio and natural frequency of each mode are discussed by referring to the modal time histories and spectral responses.

Single layer lattice shell structures with pin joints have a light feeling, little weight, apparent resistance only by axial forces and simple connections. The good performances often apply to structures for long span roofs. The structures subjected to external loads often show instability phenomena such as buckling. They cannot make plane shapes that resist external loads by bending moments. In this paper, a new single layer lattice shell structure that can make any shape is suggested Tensile members supporting bending moments reinforce the single layer lattice shell with pin joints. Initial stresses make it a self-supported structure. Structural characteristics are verified by numerical , analysis, construction tests and loading tests.

The paper presents the results of experiments of reinforced concrete shells with square plan, conducted to investigate the effect of the shell shape on the failure behaviors of the shells. The four models with different shapes and different rise-span ratios were tested. Two models of them had reversed catenary surface, and the rest of them had spherical surface. These results indicate that the shell shape affects considerably the load carrying capacity, the stiffness, the deflection mode and the distribution of the bending moment of the shell, and the large rise-span ratio encourages these tendencies.

This paper discusses on the earthquake response estimation of reticular domes supported by a sub-structure based on a push-over analysis. First, domes are represented as a series of parallel lumped masses, which can be easily modeled based on a mode decomposition concept. Second, a push-over analysis is formulated for the lumped masses including the dome and the substructure. The investigation about the accuracy of the push-over analysis follows a series of time-domain dynamic responses including plastic deformation of the substructure. Finally the restriction of the applicability is confirmed from the comparison between the push-over analyses and the time-domain nonlinear analyses, and a simple condition is found that the equivalent mass ratio of the first mode should be greater than 0.80 otherwise the dome responses would be poorly estimated.

In this paper, the damage situation of the wooden houses built near by the epicenter of the 2000 Western Tottori Earthquake was shown on the basis of the result of the earthquake damage investigation. As a result, there were no collapsed buildings and the damage of most wooden buildings was stopping at the level with middle degree in spite of strong earthquake motion. It was made clear that the traditional houses that were composed of Wooden frame and mud walls in that area had excellent earthquake-resistant ability based on the high quality of timbers and the high building technique.

An experimental study on the bending creep behaviour of full-size douglas-fir glulam beam was made under non-controlled sheltered environment for 9 years for the purpose of clarifying the efficient way of defining creep deflection curve in relation to the load duration. Two experiments were carried out at stress level of 0.3 and 0.5, which is the ratio of bending stress to static bending strength. The latter concluded creep failure after 4 years loading. In this paper, the results of these experiments are presented. For formularizing the creep deflection curve, it is necessary that the load duration should be at least more than one and a half year, but at the same time it is to be desired that first six months data is ignored. After 9 years loading of stress ratio of 0.3, unloading was made, and it showed that the flexural rigidity remained unchanged.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the flexural behaviors of active confined concrete columns subjected to especially high axial compression. Primary, off set load tests and cross sectional analysis on the laterally prestressed reinforced concrete columns were performed. Secondary, internal stress conditions on small segmental pieces of such columns in elastic region were examined and analyzed by using 3-D FEM. As a result, laterally prestressing could prevent lateral expansion of the core concrete in the columns, under flexural and compressive stresses, and improve its ultimate flexural strength and deformation capacity. Lateral prestress was acting on same region of the core concrete from internal stress distributions calculated based on the elemental tests.

In this study, experimental and analytical investigations were conducted regarding a flexural reinforcement design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with continuous fiber sheets. This paper presented methods for analyzing the bond behavior at the interface of concrete and the sheet by means of a truss model, and for calculating the ultimate bond strength of strengthened beams based on the flexural analysis under Bemoulli-Euler's hypothesis and the concept of local bond stress. As a result, it was shown that the ultimate bond strength of the sheet can be calculated with reasonable accuracy by considering the scale effect of the member on the tensile strength of concrete.

The loss of axial load carrying capacity or axial collapse of short columns is the most typical and dangerous damage to reinforced concrete (RC) buildings during severe earthquakes. Thus it was intended in this paper to study the axial collapse of short columns. Half-scale column specimens were laterally loaded until they came to be unable to sustain axial load. Axial load, loading history and main reinforcement ratio were test variables. The tests have revealed the general nature of axial collapse, the effect of test variables on it and so on.

This paper presents the method to analyze the local buckling behavior of circular tubes subjected to compression and bending. The analytical method proposed here is mainly based on the technique used in Ref.21). However, the present analysis takes into account effects of asymmetrical local buckling, and effects of both kinematic and isotropic strain hardening. The numerical results are compared with the results of experiments. According to the method proposed here, the numerical results can well predict the load-deflection curves under monotonic loading and the gradually deteriorating behavior under cyclic loading.

As a result of extensive researches, stress triaxiality ratio and local ductility were found deeply associated with crack initiation in the welded beam-column connections. When considering whether current definition of the relationship between triaxiality and local ductility can be used for judging, evaluating and predicting crack initiation behavior of the welded beam-column connections, it unfortunately turns out a difficulty to satisfy such a purpose. In this paper, emphasis at the beginning is to establish a new relationship between stress triaxiality and local ductility using the strain incremental theory. FEM analysis then is conducted to determine the critical value of crack initiation with the help of data collected from the full-scaled connection subassembly tests. For a better understanding of the new definition, detailed information on how to judge, evaluate and predict the likelihood of crack initiation mode as well as connection load-bearing ability is provided.

To simplify the non-linear dynamic design procedure on steel moment-resisting frames to seismic actions, a new design-friendly reduced analysis is proposed. Global safety domain against plastic collapse of an elastic-plastic frame becomes a convex polyhedron, and its whole figure is approximated also by a hyper-ellipsoidal yield surface from a few reference points on the surface. Its validity is checked by comparison with the results of pseudo-dynamic tests on a 2-story steej frame and a detailed computer analysis on a 9-story 3-bay frame.

This paper presents a systematic test program to investigate the inelastic cyclic behavior of bolted T-stub connections. A total of 42 tests are summarized. The parameters studied include flange thickness, column bolt diameter, column bolt gage distance, edge-distance, column bolt pretension, and loading patterns. Two deformation modes under cyclic loading are categorized by whether the column bolt yields or not. Effects of various parameters on the performance such as stiffness, strength, ductility, and energy dissipation are reported. Deformation-based and energy-based low-cycle fatigue models combined with Manson-Coffm equation are discussed, and their characteristics and limitations compared. Miner's rules coupled with the two models are examined by employing various loading patterns. The energy-based method appeared to be a reasonably accurate method to predict low-cycle fatigue of the T-stub connections.

The purpose of this research is to clarify the size effect on the uni-axial compressive behavior of circular concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) short columns. Three different sizes of CFT short column specimens were tested. Other experimental , parameters were the strength of filled concrete and loading methods (applying the compression load only on the filled-concrete and on the overall cross-section). This paper first presents the test results concerning compressive strength and discusses the evaluation of the strength of circular CFT short columns considering the size and confined effects.
