Three kinds of weathering reference materials namely polyethylene, polycarbonate and poly (ethylene terephthalate) were investigated their characteristics for temperature and ultraviolet radiation using by xenon arc and open flame carbon arc exposur devices with changing their chamber temperature, uv intensity and filters: Activation energy and power number of uv regression analysis were calculated. As the results, polyethylene has large temperature dependency while the effect of uv intensity is rather small. On the contrary, in case of polycarbonate and poly (ethylene terphthalate), the effect of temperatur and uv are quite different fom polyethylene. These materials were also exposed in spectro-uv exposure device. It is recognized that polyethylene has no spector-uv dependency but polycarbonate and poly (ethylene terephthalate) have large spectro-uv dependency. From these experiments, we can select reference materials based on the effect of temperature and uv.

The fatigue resistance of sealed joint to relative story displacement movement was studied experimentally and analytically, and the new joint design method providing the performance of sealed joint was proposed by considering its service life. At a first step, the three items required to make the joint design method were investigated, namely, the effect of cross sectional size and shape of sealed joint, the fatigue resistance of sealant at inter-section zones of sealed joints to slide motion and rocking motion of curtain wall panels and the effect of curvature radii at the comer of panels to improve the fatigue resistance of inter-sections of sealed joints. Then, the process of a new joint design method at the linear section and the intersection of sealed joint to relative story displacement movement were made on the basis of the experimental data. We further more proposed the methodology to judge the expected service life of sealed joint.

Unsaturated polyester resin for FRP waterproofing membranes have a disadvantage of shrinking in the process from liquid to solid state. It is fundamentally needed to estimate induced contraction stress of the resin for designing a good waterproofing membrane system. A new technique, in which the resin is poured in a floating frame on liquid of large specific gravity and induced contraction stress is measured, was proposed in the paper. The technique was applied for some resin samples and it was made clear that contraction stress mainly developed in a few ten hours and reached to the levels of 0.1-0.4N/mm^2.

This paper proposes a new method of evaluating the uniform hazard response spectra on the ground surface and estimating the seismic risk of a building structure based on the eauivalent linearization method. The method is useful to examine the seismic risk management of a building structure, because it gives quantitatively the seismic risk of the building structure considering the seismic environment of the adjacent area, the amplification characteristics of the subsurface structure of the site and the restoring force characteristics of the building structure. Applying the method to a case study, it is found that in the seismic risk management of a building structure it is important to control the building parameters such as the yield shear coefficient according to the amplification characteristics of the subsurface structure.

The objective of this study is to grasp the relation between structural responses due to simultaneous horizontal and vertical input motions and the phase characteristics of input motions. First of all, we confirmed that responses due to simultaneous input motions are related to cross-correlation between structural response due to horizontal motion and that due to vertical motion, using observed earthquake motions. From these results, we formulated and confirmed analytically that the responses due to simultaneous input motions will be affected by phase differences between horizontal input motion and vertical one around structure's fundamental predominant frequency.

A new frequency-domain method is developed for evaluating the earthquake input energy to a structure-pile-soil system or a super-structure alone subjected to a horizontal ground motion at an outcropping engineering bedrock surface. It is shown that the formulation of the earthquake input energy in the frequency domain is essential for including the frequency-dependent vibration property of the surface ground in terms of the wave propagation theory and the frequency-dependent property of the dynamic Winkler-type spring of the soi l around piles. It is also demonstrated that (l)the present formulation is effective for various input levels and various ground nronerties and (2)the energy input mechanism in the building structure-pile-soil system can be well described by the newly introduced energy transfer function (F-function).

This paper for the first time proposes a simplified rule to estimate effectiveness of the oil damper attached to a building fbr passive control of responses against earthquake or wind. The rule considers the in-series connection of the damper and elastic elements such as the brace member and connection device, and estimates deformation lag and loss caused by such an arrangement. Equivalent linearization using newly defined storage stiffiiess and loss stiffness is proposed. Accuracy of the rule is demonstrated by comparing with many numerical experiments. Dynamic properties and basic responses of the passive control system with the oil damper are explained by using the proposed rule.

An active damage detection method was proposed to characterize damage in bolted joints. The purpose of this study is to propose a damage detection method that can obtain the detailed information of the damage by creating feature vectors for pattern recognition. In the proposed method, the wavelet transform is applied to the sensor signals, and the feature vectors are defined by second power average of the amplitude. The feature vectors generated by experiments were successfully used as the training data for Support Vector Machine (SVM). By applying the wavelet transform to time-frequency analysis, the accuracy of pattern recognition was raised in both correlation coefficient and SVM applications. Moreover, the SVM could identify the damage with very strong discermment capability than others. Applicability of the proposed method was successfully demonstrated.

Energy dissipation mechanism of base plate yielding systems is investigated based on results of shaking table tests using a half scale steel frame with three stories. Hysteresis damping capacity of yielding base plates is verified. And effects of vertical inertia force to the energy dissipation mechanism which include impact effects are clarified. The energy dissipation of the system corresponding to the maximum momentary input energy is expressed using the maximum rigid rotational anele. The maximum response displacements are predicted considering the energy balance condition of the system.

The system identification method proposed and discussed by the authors to estimate the dynamic characteristics of a building under an imaginary fixed base condition was applied to a partly embedded nuclear reactor building. Although this building has a large soil-structure interaction (SSI) effect, and the proposed method is essentially made for systems without embedment, the aplicability of the method has already been checked and confirmed using an analytical model in a previous paper. Data on microtremors data from excitation tests. and data from earthquakes of an actual building are studied in this paper. Effects made by put-of-plane deformation of the base mat, the sharing ratio between the sealed and inner walls of the excitor force, and the number of frame averaging needed tbr reliable spectral analysis are also studied.

A method is proposed for expressing reduced member dimensions of an optimization problem. This method is based on mixture model for probabilistic principal component analyzers for feature extraction of given member section list, whose parameter can be determined using an expectation-maximization algorithm. In this paper, a new efficient method enables to find an optimum set of member sections of the steel building frames so that total weight would be minimum subject to constraints on interstory drifts under design spectrum-compatible earthquakes.

Design of flat space frames generally depends on vertical loads. The increase of vertical loads causes continual member buckling and even collapse of the structure. In this paper, authors propose a structural system in which special members are arraneed for a flat system truss. Installing the special members in the system truss, it becomes a redundant structure under heavy vertical loads. High strength steel budding-restrained members are suitable for the special members in the system truss. This paper studies structural performances of the system using numerical analyses, and also reports exoerimental results for the high strength steel buckling-restrained members.

The minimum performance that is reauired for columns designed by the old code during severe earthquakes is to support axial load, or escape from axial collapse. However, in the past collapse tests of RC columns failing in shear after flexural yielding have not been done although those of columns failing in shear before flexural yielding have been done. Therefore, it is intended in this study to conduct such test. Test variables are amounts of transverse and longitudinal reinforcement and loading cycles. The effect of the variables on modes of shear failure and lateral drift-shear force relations up to the collapse are studied. An eauation to predict lateral drift at collapse is also presented, where the ratio of comouted shear and flexural strengths are used.

A simplified nonlinear analysis procedure to oredict earthquake responses of multi-story asvmmetric buildings is presented and some examples are shown in this paper. In this procedure. their responses are predicted through a nonlinear static analysis of MDOF model and estimation of seismic demand of equivalent SDOF model, considering the change in the first mode shape at each nonlinear stage and the effect of the first and second mode contribution. The results show that the responses of multi-story asymmetric buildings can be satisfactorily predicted by the proposed procedure.

In this paper. cyclic load tests were carried out on 3 concrete beam-interior column frame assemblies, in order to investigate the effects of prestress on ultimate strength of the joint cores. The variables adopted in the test were the type of the beams, ie. PC and RC, and prestress in the beams. From these tests it was found that the prestress and the type of the beams did not affect the ultimate strength of the frame assemblies, although the input horizontal shear into the joint cores increased with the magnitude of the prestress.

In designing passively vibration-controlled buildings, it is difficult for the designers to evaluate the response with various types of dampers, especially the dampers cannot be distributed uniformly because of architectural limitations. Trial-and-error-based design with time history analyses does not necessarily promote understanding the relationship between damper layout and their effects. The present paper proposes simplified response estimation methods for passively vibration-controlled multistory buildings with elasto-plastic damper and visco-elastic damper systems including non uniform distributions. In these methods various equivalent linearization techniques are introduced, and their accuracies are compared with time-history analyses.

Unembedded type column bases in SRC buildings were damaged by Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake. It is thought that the tension forced due to overturning moment is the reason why these damages. Over the past few years after Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake, several experimental studies have been carried out on seismic performance of the Unembedded type column bases under tensile force. From these structural test, it has been reported that ultimate strength under the tensile force can be evaluated by design code in AIJ, but the evaluation method of deformation capacity remain unanswered. This paper presents the equilibrium condition of forces, compatibility condition and constitutive equation in the column base, and shows the method of carrying out the elasto-plastic analysis. The analytical results are in accordance with the test results well.

Shot blasting using alumina grits is used to prepare the faying surface of the frictional grip connection by high strength bolts. Faying surface treatment with Inorganic Zinc-rich painting has been already used for such connection of steel structures and will be the effective method for aluminum structures that has superior corrosion resistance. The purpose of this study is to confirm the relationship between the slip coefficient and each the coating thickness of Inorganic Zinc-rich painting, and also the ground work treatment of aluminum surface. The present paper reports the results of above mentioned investigations. (l)When the ground work treatment of aluminum surface is ground with #80 grindstone before painting, slip coefficient can get more than 0.45. (2)The slip coefficient can get more than 0.45 even one side painting if it's process the above. In this case, another friction surface must do the grind stone finish (the grain size is greater than #180) or shot blasting finish using aluminum grits F36. (3)Thickness of paint influences slip load, and the most suitable thickness range is l00 to 200 micro meter. (4)If the thickness of paint is greater than 200 micro meter, the preload tension of bolt becomes lower than a case of thickness less than it.
