In this study we investigated the high bending strength cement mortar. Generally, cement mortar has low bending strength although it has high compressive strength. This problem is very important for cement mortar and concrete. Therefore we attempted to study about high bending strength cement mortar. As the technique, we aimed at curing the high bending strength cement mortar under the low temperature in early age. As the result, the effect of curing under the low temperature for 3 days from placing was found as the method for increasing bending strength of cement mortar, decreasing shrinkage and decreasing pore volume.

This experimental study aimed to clarify some influence of several initial curing conditions to give the adhesion unity of concrete and finishing mortar. In this experiment, the initial curing conditions were set six types of environment conditions. The six types of environment were standard curing, wind and standard curing, hot and wet curing, freeze and dry curing, hot and moisture curing, and, freeze fusion repetitions curing. Each initial curing gave for finishing mortar when it applied on concrete specimens. After each initial curing finished, these each specimen was burdened two severe environments which were sunshine sprinkling repetitions or freeze fusion repetitions. And then, these specimens were measured distortion and change of adhesive strength occurred to them.

In this study, we investigated the influence of material segregations on the behaviors of high-strength concrete. The test results indicate that the mechanical properties of structural concrete more easily influenced by the material segregation. Material segregation may result in inadequate other performances of the structure using high-strength concrete, besides the degradation of mechanical properties, due to the significant differences in temperature rise and shrinkage. 90%, which is a ratio of actual coarse aggregate area to be the planed one, may be considered as an allowable limit of material segregation. Also, there is no great difference in the performances of structural concrete if the material segregation index of upper layer is not more than 20%.

The purpose of this paper is to clarify the frost resistance of fiber reinforced cement sidings through an outdoor exposure test, and the relation between the results of the outdoor exposure test and the results of the accelerated freezing and thawing test on frost resistance. The outdoor exposure test was carried out at Sapporo, Kamiiso and Kitami for 10 years, and the accelerated test was performed according to JIS A 5422-1995. 21 kinds of sidings which differ in production methods and raw materials were prepared. The results obtained may be summarized as follows: 1) Sidings having a apparent density above 1.2g/cm^3 are durable to freezing and thawing action in outdoor exposure test and accelerated test. Also sidings containing air-void, preformed cellular plastic spherical materials and wood flake are durable. 2)The results of the outdoor exposure test are not consistent with the results of the accelerated test. It is surmised that there are affectable factors on frost resistance which are not taken account in the accelerated test.

Snowdrift formation on and around buildings can be serious problems in snowy cold region. The planning of buildings in such areas should consider the position of snowdrifts. A wind tunnel experiment using model snow is a useful tool for estimating snow accumulation on building. However, the law of similarity for this experiment has not been revealed. In this study, the authors have been investigated the effects of turbulence intensity on snowdrift. We carried out wind tunnel experiments using model snow particle under the different turbulence intensity of air flows. Snowdrifts on the leeward of the snow fence were compared under the several conditions.

The subject of failure mechanism is of much importance not only for structural reliability analysis but also for structural design. In the present paper the preferable and undesirable failure modes in aseismic design of steel frame structures are analyzed, and the failure probabilities of the story mechanisms of frame structure are investigated through both computational and theoretical analysis. The story mechanisms are classified into three types: upper collapse pattern, middle collapse pattern and lower collapse pattern. It is found that: the upper story mechanism with a relatively smaller number of failure stories is less likely to develop; for middle story mechanisms with an identical number of failure stories, the reliability index increases with lhe increase of the number of intact stories below the failure stories of structure; and the occurrence probability of lower story mechanism is always higher than that of middle story mechanisms with the same number of failure stories.

Ambient vibration tests were conducted on wood houses constructed in a traditional manner in Kyoto to estimate their natural frequencies and vibration modes. The ambient vibration tests can be used as a simple method for evaluating their seismic capacity. To establish a method, it is important to grasp the factor affecting the estimated vibration characteristics and variation range of the estimated natural frequency. We evaluate (i) base shear coefficient, (ii) finishing materials of houses, (iii) adjoining house and (iv) seasonal variation, as affector to vibration characteristics. As a result, (i) there are significant correlation between estimated natural frequency and base shear coefficient, (ii) modern finishing materials can change their relation, (iii) adjoining house also effects on natural frequencies and vibration modes and (iv) the range of seasonal variation of natural frequency is 5-10%.

This paper proposes a time history response analysis method which can predict the ultimate behavior of base-isolated buildings caused by buckling fracture of laminated rubber bearings. In the method, the characteristics of the bearings are represented by a macroscopic mechanical model expanded by adding an axial spring to an existing model. The nonlinear spring models are used for its rotational spring and shear spring, and the central difference method is applied to solve the equations. In order to verify the validity of the method, simulation analyses for shaking table tests of a base-isolated structure model. The results of the analyses indicate that the proposed method accurately expresses nonlinear behaviors of laminated rubber bearings, such as load degradation, hardening and negative stiffness under large deformation.

The roof structure of a large span building is often composed from truss beams. Generally, its collapse phenomena are caused by the buckling of chord members in truss beams. However, each chord member has to be divided into some elements to calculate such unstable behavior with usual finite elements. As a result, the analytical model has much more degrees of freedom and it is extremely difficult for structural designers to simulate the collapse behavior of the roof structure during design processes. For this sake, one of us has presented the new type of a beam element to analyze the nonlinear behavior of a truss beam with in-plane buckling of its chord members by using a single element. To understand the nonlinear behaviors of a truss beam more strictly, the lateral buckling of the truss beam should be considered as well as in-plane buckling. Then, it is necessary to evaluate the out-of-plane buckling of chord members in the truss beams. In this paper, we present the analytical method which enables us to evluate the post-buckling behavior of the chord member conveniently and systematically.

Simplified evaluation method of equivalent S-wave velocity of partial improved ground is presented in this paper. Equivalent S-wave velocity, which is calculated by the homogenization method, is simply determined by the shape of the improvement, replacement ratio and S-wave velocity ratio of the improvement and soil. The reliability of the equivalent velocity by the method is evaluated by the S-wave velocity profiles estimated using the microtremors array measurements in a field. Good agreements with measurement and calculated S-wave velocity suggest that the developed method is useful of estimation of equivalent S-wave velocity of partial improved ground.

In recent years, the research on the damage and response displacement performance of the building of a large earthquake, for example, the Hyogoken Nanbu earthquake, are widely proposed. On the other hand, a lot of researches on the damage evaluation of the high-rise building after the earthquake are reported. However, report of research of wooden houses are few, hoped for. To the radical of this background, this research proposes the index of the relevance of finish material damage and structure damage by the static-shear-loading test of wooden house bearing walls with finish material, and reports the verification result of the validity of the index by full-scales wooden house vibration tests.

In the composite shear wall frame system proposed by authors, steel coupling girders function as hysteretic dampers. RC shear wall panels are designed such that the panels behave elastically when exposed to a large seismic excitation. A series of dynamic analysis was performed in order to investigate ductility demand for the coupling girder, as well as the force response of the shear wall. The use of steel wide flanges as the coupling girders was found sufficient by comparing the cumulative plastic deformation demand and test data. Design shear and flexural force for the RC wall panel, as well as the design tensile force for the wall base, was obtained using the analytical results.

Seismic performance of existing brittle R/C buildings is discussed based on energy balanced response and thc relation of Seismic Structural Capacity Index (Is-index) and the energy input is discussed in this paper. Based on the discussions above, the seismic performance of existing R/C buildings with hysteresis dampers are evaluated based on energy response. The nonlinear time-history analysis results shows the proposed equations can be satisfactorily estimated the seismic performance of existing R/C buildings with hysteresis dampers.

This paper present and discusses experimental results on the seismic performance retrofitted low concrete strength R/C column. In order to investigate this objective and to evaluate ultimate shear strength, test results of 9 columns retrofitted by various methods were examined under cyclic lateral loads. The main finding is that, those columns retrofitted with steel plate only and steel plate as well as aramid fiber sheets were superior in seismic performance. On the other hand, when shear capacity of existing low strength concrete R/C column is evaluated, it is necessary to consider not only current design in seismic assessments but also design equation for the bond splitting strength. In addition, seismic retrofitted R/C columns could be evaluated by using the compressive strength of concrete in consideration of confinement effect. It was clarified that the calculated values using the above formula agreed well with experimental results for shear capacity and failure modes.

In this paper, the accurate response of reinforced concrete buildings by the equivalent linearization technique, where the damping factor is given by thc function of ductility, is simply shown by the independent seismic factors of the seismic spectrum and the independent structural factors of a building. Then, the effects of the factors such as building height, base shear coefficient, ductility factor, etc. on thc seismic performance of buildings are examined, and simple equations in order to evaluate the seismic performance level are induced. Finally, the seismic performance levels required by two calculation methods, which are capacity-based design method and calculation of allowable stress, etc., specified in current Building Standard Law Enforcement Order, are discussed.

Experiments and 3-D FEM analyses were performed on high-strength concrete columns laterally prestressed by the shear reinforcements to study the influence of the active confinement upon shear strength and crack behaviors. The lateral prestress has been introduced in proportion to thc strength of concrete, and the width of every crack over transverse reinforcements has been measured by a microscope. By increasing thc lateral pressure as mentioned above, shear crack strength and ultimate shear strength have increased proportionally, however, the effectiveness of active confinement has been weakened with decreasing axial force ratio. The FEM analyses can evaluate the shear crack strength and ultimate shear strength, and explain the effect of the active confinement on shear behaviors by evaluating the intensity of confinement in tri-axial state of stress with minor principal stress and equivalent confining pressure.

This paper presents results of welding inspection and loading tests conducted to beam-to-column connections cut out from an existing steel building constructed in 1986. From the results of thorough welding inspections, inner defects are frequently detected at corner of square tube column, and differences among individuals of inspectors are examined. From the results of dynamic loading tests conducted on the beam-to-column connections, the influence of defects on the deformation capacity and the failure procedure are observed. Though deformation capacity of existing steel subassemblages meets minimum requirements of current seismic design, it is less than half that of new steel subassemblages fabricated according to current design practice.

It is crucial to establish method evaluating ductility demand of beams for seismic design of structures. However, there are few studies on the demand of haunched beams and reduced section beam (internal plastic hinge beams) in steel moment resisting frames subjected to severe earthquakes. This paper proposes a damage prediction method of internal hinge beams based on energy equilibrium, and confirms applicability of the method. By applying the proposed method, the difference in damage between internal hinge beams and ordinary beams has been quantitatively clarified, and it can be concluded that the ductility demand of the former beams is not more than the the demand for the latter beams.

An kinds of researchs about buckling of web and flange afe performed as a single plate under the assumption of the boundary condition. But few researches on the coupled instability of web and flange had been performed so far. As elements of H shaped steel menbers, the behavior of web and flange is effected by earch other. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to understand the interaction between the elements of web and flange plates when coupled buckling happens. In this paper, the analysis is done with energy method. Buckling interrelation between web and flange is clarified. And a new method of evaluation of coupled buckling strength under bending-shear and axial force is proposed by using parameter of geometrical shape about web and flange of H Shaped member.

A standard base plate connection is commonly adopted for column bases of low-rise steel structures. In most practical design, the column bases are likely covered by shallow concrete slab to hide the bolted base plate and level the slab. There is no guideline, that reflects the influences of the slab on the seismic performance of the column base. Cyclic loading tests are conducted, and the effects of thickness and shape of slab are investigated with reference to the standard base plate connection. The tests show that the covering concrete slab contributes to both the initial stiffness and ultimate strength. The plastic theory is applied to express the punching shear failure and the compressive failure in the slab, and the ultimate strength is estimated. Reasonable correlation with the corresponding test results is notable.

This paper presents a numerical study on the effects of the width-to-thickness ratio, axial force ratio, and slenderness ratio on local buckling and strength deterioration of steel box columns subjected to cyclic loading. The maximum strength experienced during cyclic loading, and the strengths remaining after prescribed rotation angles are examined. The following observations are notable: 1) The maximum strength increases with a larger axial force ratio, but serious strength degradation is present due to local buckling; 2) The strength degradation is affected significantly by the width- to-thickness ratio, but the effect of the slenderness ratio is minor; 3) The width-to-thickness requirements stipulated in the present Japanese seismic design codes are not necessarily sufficient for columns sustain large cyclic loading up to 0.03rad in rotation.

Theoretical studies are presented on the prediction of bending strength of a composite beam-column subjected to bi-directional bending. The term bi-directional bending is defined as the bending where the both ends of a bar are subjected to end moments of differnt directions. The main objective of this study is to refine the AIJ design formula which is based on the modified-superposed strength method. Strength of a composite beam-column, subjected to bi-directional bending, is obtained as the smaller value between the biaxial short column strength of the critical end section and that of the approximate solution of collapse at the mid-span. Proposed formula shows a good agreement with precise numerical solutions and/or experimental results.
