    This paper deals with air-permeability of concrete cover and its relation to carbonation resistance of concretes. A comparative study was performed with three kinds of air-permeability testers (the single-chamber method, Figg's intrusive method and the Torrent permeability test method (TPT)), and their capabilities to differentiate the qualities of concretes were examined using six different concrete specimens. The test methods were capable of detecting correctly the expected differences of the concrete quality &ldqou;penetrability” at a significant or highly significant level. Classifications for air-permeability of the RILEM CEMBREAU method and the TPT were compared to carbonation depths of concretes and their applicability was discussed. Also, threshold values for air-permeability of the single-chamber method and Figg's intrusive methods were proposed. Future overviews and issues to establish performance-based control of durability of RC structures were described.

    This paper proposes a quantitative seismic risk index for building structures utilizing seismic risk curves. The index is computed as follows: (1) compute probability distribution of uniform hazard spectra on the engineering bedrock at the point of interest, (2) compute the effect of subsurface structure on the spectra if necessary, and (3) compute the proposed index utilizing the expectation values during a certain period of time, which are calculated from the maximum seismic responses by non-linear multi-modal analysis. In order to verify their effectiveness, the proposed indexes of 29 analysis models comprised of seismic sources, subsurface structures, and 3-story buildings are calculated. Consequently, a good correlation between the proposed index and the probable maximum loss was found, as well as between the index and the seismic life-cycle cost; the effectiveness of the proposed index was verified.

    We propose a new technique for evaluating empirical site effects in time domain, extending the concept of Birgören and Irikura (2005). They developed a method for estimating coherent site effects by averaging wavelet coefficients of the Meyer-Yamada wavelet for many seismic records. In general, site effects consist of coherent and incoherent signals. If only coherent site effects are evaluated, it is underestimated compared with true site effects. We propose a new averaging approach to accurately evaluate both the coherent and incoherent signals.

    A novel structural diagnosis method for reinforced concrete members is proposed to detect concrete cracks and to evaluate the amount of reinforcing steel. In the proposed method, the soundness of the member is diagnosed from the wave profile of the monitored natural frequency with thermal loads. The principle of the method is experimentally investigated in the paper, which lies in that the natural frequency transition of a concrete member differs by the thermal stress distribution in the member section, and that the thermal stress distribution also differs by the occurrence of the concrete crack or the amount of reinforcing steel.

    We show the improved method of the generation of three components of statistical Green's functions considering near-field and intermediate-filed terms developed by Satoh (2008). In the improved method, permanent ground displacements are obtained by the causal Fast Fourier Transform method. The improved method is verified by comparing the generated statistical Green's functions on the seismic bedrock and the engineering bedrock in the near source region with waves computed by the wavenumber integration method for a hypothesized dip-slip earthquake with Mw4.9 As a result, the displacements including permanent displacements of statistical Green's functions generated by the improved method are reasonably reproduced computed ones. On the other hand, the statistical Green's functions generated by the conventional method in which near-field and the intermediate-field terms are not considered tend to underestimate the computed waves of especially vertical and radial components in the near source region.

    Horizontal biaxial loading tests were conducted on full-scale high-damping rubber bearings (HDR) to observe its performance. Two HDRs of diameter 700mm and 1300mm were used.Hysteresis loops by biaxial loadings became more swollen than those by uniaxial loadings.Hysteresis loops in the sub axis were so singular that the maximum restoring force was given around zero displacement. In strong nonlinear state, restoring force act in circumferential direction that cause torsional deformations of HDRs. This effect resulted in an earlier failure of HDR700. A technique to identify HDR's biaxial force deformation relationship was presented and demonstrated to have good performance.

    The paper describes a new analytical model for predicting the large displacement behavior of square lead-rubber isolation bearings. The present model is developed by extending to three dimensions an existing model for elastomeric isolation bearings under severe axial loads and shear deformations. Static loading tests of square lead-rubber bearings are performed to investigate the effect of loading direction on bearing behavior. The test results showed that the ultimate behavior is strongly influenced by loading direction, especially for large shear deformation and high axial load. The results of analyses using the new model show very good agreement with the experimental results.

    This report describes the shear buckling and shear strain distribution of plywood used in wooden panel construction bearing walls. The purpose of the research was to confirm the affect of plywood shear buckling on shear strength, measure the shear stress distribution on plywood in detail through multipoint measurement, and clarify shear characteristics experimentally. The specimens were wooden glued panels with external dimensions of 1,000mm×1,000mm. The specimen parameters were plywood thickness (3.0, 5.0mm), bonding width (15, 30, 45mm). The test results confirmed the shear capacity and stiffness of the wooden panels decreased as a result of shear buckling of the plywood. The shear stress distribution was confirmed to show the same value before shear buckling occurs and that the stress distribution is non-uniform after buckling occurs. The ratio was confirmed to become larger as the shear deformation angle increased.

    The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of column base joint with Nagahozosashi-komisen by the experiment and to examine the validity of the method of estimate considering the destruction of base. The results are as follows. The joint strength calculated from these results is close to two times of the strength prescribed in the notice. The specifications of one hozo and two komisens type and two hozos and two komisens type showed the strength beyond the hardware type (HD-10). The maximum strength of Nagahozosashi-komisen and the destruction form can be calculated in most cases by the new estimate method including the destruction pattern of base, hozo and komisen.

    Interior wall has some small opening for ducts, switch boxes and sockets. Static loading tests were conducted to determine the influences of small opening upon the seismic performance of shearing wall. The shear wall consists of a gypsum-based material; glass fiber reinforced gypsum board (GRG). GRG board comprises a gypsum core that contains glass fibers, embedded and reinforced with non-woven glass fibers on surfaces thereof. The seismic performance of the interior wall with small opening was decreased about 90% compared with the wall with no opening. Possible proposals were made based on the results of static tests in a process of design and installation.

    We, in this article, propose a manual strength calculation method of single bolted timber joint loaded parallel to the grain. The strength calculation method takes into account the edge distance, the end distance, and the slenderness ratio as the parameters. The validity of the proposed calculation method was confirmed by the experimental results, the edge distance of 1d, 2d, 4d, 6d, 7d, the end distance of 1d, 2.5d, 4d, 7d, 10d, the slenderness ratio of 0.625d, 3.75d, 7.5d, 10d.

    The objective of this study was to develop the general theory for analysis of multi-layered built-up-beams, considering the effect of interlayer slip. The verification was also sought through an extensive experimental study. The theory was applied to the composite beams fastened wooden beams together with mechanical joints. And it described the behavior of the composite beam as superposition of two kinds of mechanism. One was the bending behavior of the parallel chord truss and the other was that of the solid beam. The experimental results showed good agreement with the theoretical calculations and the proposed theory was proved to be applicable in designing such constructions.

    In order to carry out the seismic isolation retrofit works safely and effectively against great axial force of upper structure, we developed a new temporary supporting method applying shear force transfer mechanism by prestressed joints of a column. The proposed method is able to secure enough space by eliminating unnecessary supporting structures on the isolation floor after the retrofit. Full scale tests were conducted to evaluate vertical load support capacities of the method. We investigates that failure mode of the support system, shear strength of the prestressed joint and load deformation characteristics were revealed from the experimental results. Consequently, it has been confirmed that the proposed method would secure the safety and high performance during the period of retrofit works by the shear force transfer capacities.

    In recent years, the behavior of corrugate plate has been positively studied in order to make for practical use as a new earthquake-resistant element. Buckling strength of corrugate plate was generally calculated by regarding as anisotropic plate so far. However, it has also been understood in the previous studies that a corrugate plate is somewhat different from an anisotropic plate even if their Out-of-Plane rigidity are almost the same. This paper is intended to present a theoretical and numerical study on the buckling strength of anisotropic and corrugate plate. The quantitative calculations for the buckling strength of the anisotropic plate under bending and shear stress are proposed through parametric studies and the difference between anisotropic and corrugate plate is also discussed.

    In our previous paper, the possibility of flexural buckling of slender piles in liquefied soil was presented, and then the boundary conditions are assumed to be ideal such as pinned or fixed end. The rotational deformation of the pile heads is, however, restrained by the footing beams in the real structures. Therefore, the boundary condition should be assumed to be arbitrary rotational spring.
    In this paper, flexural buckling behavior of the steel piles with rotational spring in the liquefied soil during earthquakes is clarified, and the buckling stress of piles with the soil-pile interaction is estimated by the design codes using modified equivalent slenderness ratio.

    Compressive strength of a steel hollow pyramid placed onto the open mouth of a steel square tube, which is simply named the steel pyramid-to-tube socket connection, was experimentally investigated. Thirteen specimens were tested with various conditions such as welded or metal-touched between the elements, free or restraint edge of the tube, full-web or open-web of the pyramid, entirely uniform compression or local compression of loading, and normal friction or reduced friction. The ultimate behavior, and consequently, the compressive strength as well as the stiffness of the connection were largely affected by these conditions. The analytical resolution about the effects is not available at present. However, the socket connection with the ordinary condition that the pyramid is welded to the tube and to the lid plate, provides sufficient stiffness and strength for practical use.

    A lot of melted zinc plating is used for an outside steel frame. On the other hand, it is pointed out that the plating crack enters in the corner part when the cold forming corner type steel pipe is plated.
    Here, the reproduction experiment of the plating crack was conducted with a real large cold forming corner type steel pipe for an architectural steel frame, and the method of preventing the plating crack was examined.
    It proposes the following respect from these as a method of preventing the plating crack.
    1.No plating processing is done to the corner part of the steel pipe, and melted zinc is not touched with the steel material.
    2.The steel pipe for plating is made a manufactured steel pipe with the press.
    3.The diaphragm is installed in the edge of the steel pipe, and thermal deformation is restrained.

    Subassemblage tests were conducted on steel beam to concrete filled square steel tube (CFT) column moment connections to investigate the structural behavior of electroslag welding connections between internal diaphragms and steel tube. The writers propose an ultimate strength equation for these connections, based on combined stresses on a fracture line within the steel plate of the CFT column. They have already proposed a model for a load-displacement relation for predicting the local tensile elasto-plastic behavior of CFT column to steel beam moment connections using internal diaphragms. This paper proposes an improved load-displacement relation model for these connections including an ultimate strength equation for electroslag welding connections in the load-displacement relation model. The improved model is found to agree approximately with this experimental result up to large deformations.

    RC shear walls coupled with beams are becoming widely used for high-rise buildings in Japan. Since short-span coupling beams are subjected to large displacement during an earthquake, high ductility and excellent energy absorption performance are required.
    RC coupling beams with low-yield-point steel damper in the mid-span (coupling beam damper) have been developed and experimentally investigated in this study. Steel dampers in the mid-span are embedded into the RC beams at the both ends, and embedded lengths are ranging from 2 to 3.5 times as long as steel depth.
    The coupling beam dampers provide the stable hysteretic performance up to 1/20 of drift angle, and equivalent damping coefficients of 20 to 30%. Sufficient amount of shear reinforcement needs to be arranged, so as to transfer shear force from steel damper to RC beams. Shear reinforcements are more effective when arranged in the tip of RC beams.
