A new structural system in which a thin-walled domical structure is stiffened by a tensegric structural system is presented. The new system shows an increased buckling capacity and a decreased burden on the boundary structure. Loading tests on models proved the above advantages of the proposed structural system experimentally. The system has also been applied to a full-size dome of 35 m in diameters. Statical tests carried out on the building have proved the effectiveness of prestressing in the system. Dynamic characteristics of the real dome have been obtained by vibration tests.

The shear strength of a new SRC column in the direction of week axis is determined. The SRC column is a small size steel encased reinforced concrete column using high stregth concrete and hoops. Seven SRC column specimens were tested. The influence that concrete section is separated by steel can not be ignored in the evaluation of the shear strength in the direction of week axis, although this influence can be ignored in the direction of strong axis. Considering this, the shear strength is evaluated using truss-arch mechanism. A possible way to use this SRC column in practice is suggested.

In order to make human life everlasting, it is essential to recover nature in the midst of the urban areas in the most developed countries. The possibility of a mega-structure which plays a role of a basis of the renovation of urban areas compatible with the recovery of nature is discussed on condition that human life must be kept pleasant and free from any restraints. The megastructure obtained is of a scale of 10 stories with 100 m of story height and 1 km^2 of total areas. One structure can support urban life of twenty thousands people, emancipating 0.9 km^2 of ground surface from the monopolized use of human being.

In the design and construction of a long beam, considerable attention should be paid to its deflection. This paper discusses a method that minimize the beam deflection by successfully utilizing the composite effect of steel beam and concrete slab. The camber of the beam to cancel its deflection can be reduced, if the beam is temporarily supported at several points until the achievement of composite effect. The error of the camber can be moreover adjusted by pushing up the supports. Also presented is a practical application of the method to the long span crossed beam in a highrize office building.

This paper shows the map of Japan representing basic wind speeds which were derived by using annual maximum wind speeds observed at weather stations in Japan. The basic wind speeds shown in the map are 100-year recurrence values for the 10-minute mean wind speeds at an altitude of 10 m above a flat and open country. Annual changes of terrain roughness caused by the urbanization of regions peripheral to the weather stations were taken into special consideration. The annual maximum wind speed data were homogenized in consideration of the annual changes of terrain roughness. The results of this analysis are employed in the "Recommendations for Loads on Buildings", compiled by the Architectural Institute of Japan.

Many steel structural buildings were severely damaged by the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake on January 17,1995. In order to restore those buildings to normal state, the authors immediately drew up an original recommendation which included techniques for repair and strengthening, and a design concept for retrofitting. According to the recommendation, retrofitting has continued after the earthquake with some buildings being reconstructed nowadays. Some of the practical techniques and design concepts applied to retrofit office buildings are introduced in this report, providing a comparison between the damaged and finished conditions.

A new permanent ground anchorage system of compression type developed by the authors has been applied in several practical projects. This paper presents an intensive investigation for the pull-out capacity and displacement behavior of the anchor on the basis of the full-scale tests and long-term in situ performance observations. The results show that the pull-out capacity of the anchor is much stronger than those of other types used commonly. Meanwhile, the efficiency and applicability of the new anchorage system have been confirmed by making a comparison between their designed and measured capacity.

Sliding bearing tests were carried out to investigate the friction coefficient dependence on velocity and pressure. And the applicability for a new base-isolation system consisting of elastic sliding bearings and laminated rubber bearings is also investigated by dynamic response analyses taking account of friction coefficient dependence on velocity and pressure. From the experimental results, it is found that friction coefficient has peak value at about 15 kine and decreases as pressure increases. From the theoretical results, the response of base-isolated system is little affected by velocity and pressure. Furthermore, the response under vertical excitation of earthquake is also little affected.

The Kobe Crystal Tower,32 storied high rise building, was struck by the South of Hyogo prefecture earthquake at location very near to the most severe disaster area. In this report, it is shown how this building resisted against to such a big earthquake, through elasto-plastic dynamic analysis applying observed wave records, detail analysis by FEM, non destructive testings and referring to the design requirements and quality records of the realized building elements and construction.

This paper presents a simplified design procedure which incorporate an existing prediction method for base isolated buildings into design methods for isolation devices (rubber bearings and hysteresis dampers). The procedure enables a designer to easily identify the relationship between the seismic behavior of base-isolated buildings and the chracteristics of isolation devices. The prediction method, proposed by Prof. Akiyama, is based on energy balance between the total input seismic energy and energy absorbed by the isolation devices. The design method for devices were developed based on the experimental results (ultimate capacity).

This paper presents the ultimate capacity of the natural rubber bearings. The natural rubber bearing was widely used as isolation device of seismic isolation system. It's important to grasp the ultimate capacity of isolation devices in the design of isolated structures. The ultimate compressive strength, tensile elongation capacity and shear deformation capacity of natural rubber bearings were clarified by the full-scale tests as follows: a) The ultimate compressive strength was over 1500 kg/cm^2 in compressive stress. b) The elongation capacity due to simple tension test was 300% in tensile strain. c) The maximum shear deformation was 400% in shear strain.

This is a study of Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD) which reduce vibration in strong wind of long period structures such as high-rise buildings and tall towers. This paper discussed that experiment of Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD), which was the basic characteristics of circular type TLD using wave absorber. The result that the maximum displacement responses under the steady state simple harmonic excitation decreased to approximately 45% to 70%.

The yield strength of beam-to-column joint panel of RHS, CHS are investigated as follows: 1) FEM analysis is carried out in order to investigate the influence of axia force and the ratio of panel height to width to the relationship between panel shear force and shear deformation angle. 2) Equations of yield strength of the panel are proposed from approximate plastic analysis. As the results, it is presented that the yield strength by proposed estimation is more accurate than the conventional one for each section.

New ground exploration system is developed for using seismic cone penetration test, and MWD logging which measures resistances and velocity of rotary percussion drill while drilling. The seismic cone penetration test is used for soft soils and the MWD logging for hard soils. The new system can survey from soft soil to hard soil for combining both the seismic cone penetration test and the MWD logging. Presumed N-values. Nc-value and Np-value. estimated from the seismic cone penetration test and the MWD logging are fairly good agreement with SPT N-values respectively.

The authors carried out simultaneous horizontal and vertical vibration tests and simulation analyses of a three-dimensional floor isolation system of low-friction sliding type. As results of vibration tests, the authors confirmed that the system is capable of moving and demonstrating three-dimensional isolation effects when earthquake motions occur. As the results of simulation analyses, response acceleration, relative displacement, phase lag, and frictional hysteresis were simulated well. On the other hand, the floor isolation systems in Kansai area worked on 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake. And the authors confirmed the efficiency and the confidence for isolation effects of the system.

A full-scale smoke flow test and a field model simulation were conducted to examine the characteristics of smoke movement in a galleried large-scale void. In both the test and simulation the smoke layer was formed in the upper part of the galleria and smoke layer became stationary at the high elevation. And the smoke was exhausted effectively across the whole widths of the smoke exhaust vents. So it was confirmed that the floor of galleria was not exposed to the smoke and that galleria was able to attain a high level of safety during the evacuation period.
