This paper presents a design of database system for the effective manage-ment of the type specimens of insect: ‘TYPE’. TYPE is designed with a relational database model which can connect with several data tables for wide range of information about the type specimens of insects. A proto-type system was constructed on a personal computer with dBASE III PLUS. The functions of the system such as data-inputing, data-editing, reference to database, printing-out are available on a Menu-system, so that users was able to operate the system easily without knowledges of the precise structure of the database or the system-commands. The system ‘TYPE’ was revealed to be highly useful to manage the information about the type specimens of insects.

The Image Database with Enhanced AnaLyzing System (IDEALS) was developed. Image data are stored in a laser disk unit which is controlled by a personal computer. The system has the functions to manage both image and numerical/character data. The image data from the laser disk unit or any other analogue video sources taken into the system are always A/D converted, so that the digital image analyses become possible in an image processing unit connected to the personal computer. The useful functions to analyze the image data are given by several kinds of commands prepared in the system. Furthermore, users can easily add new functions to the system by either newly developing external commands or defining macro commands.

At the field of the agriculture, image information, such as photographs or figures, are as important as documented information. But, as it comes to tele-comunications, image informations are quite difficult to handle with. It spends a lot of communication time, costs a money, and requires knowledges about the image data communication protocols. Then ordinary persons cannot send nor receive image data.
In this paper, I introduce an image information delivery experimental system, sending them to facsimilie equipements, which spreaded widely. In this system, image data sender needs only a personal computer and a facsimilie board, which is inserted to extension bus slot. So this system is constructed easy and cheeply. And just a facsimilie equipement is required to an image data receiver.

Practical applications of image processing need some special devices and instruments in general, but, sometimes we would like to execute easily image processing for various purposes-for example, diagnosis of growth states of crops and/or stocks by individual farmers- with suitable speed and low cost, and to know the processed results immediately. In present study, we attempt to construct a PC (personal computer)-based image processing system with similar or superior functions to popular instruments specially designed for image processing for high-speed computers rather than PC, through setting up two boards (HyPER FRAME+ and HyPER ViSion+) on the PC such as NEC's PC9801 series. We develop a C software library which consists of various functions suitable for image processing, and use the conversational method of the menu selection by ”mouse”. This system can be applied to the construction of image database and the measurement of shape characters of animals, plants, etc.
In part 1, we introduce and demonstrate the ideas, the methods and the usages of 1) digitization of the video pictures, 2) presentation and preservation of the image data, 3) edition of digital image such as ”copy”, ”move”, ”delete” and ”paint”.
