The number of the information systems on the WWW has been increasing explosively. Most of the information is, however, served on the "page to page" base and the accessibility for the required information is extremely inconvenient. Therefore database systems with retrieval functions are highly required. Though, In fact, several information retrieval systems for WWW have been suggested, it is not easy for non-specialists of database or computer programming to handle them for their own databases.
In this study, we developed a simple retrieval system on WWW called "Wgrep", using Perl language. The installation of "Wgrep" is simple and the development of database systems based on "Wgrep" is easy. To develop database systems with "Wgrep", we don't have to define any special database structures at all. Using "Wgrep", as a sample application, we developed "Vegetable and Fruits Variety Image Database". We found that the performance of "Wgrep" is reasonable and the applicability of it is very high.

A computer program for calculating coefficients of parentage for self-pollinating crops was written in Prolog, a programming language with logical operations for artificial intelligence and data retrieval applications. Breeding lines of malting barley in Fukuoka Agricultural Research Center were analyzed. It was found that a few ancestors constituted a major proportion of the genetic base of modern cultivars. Only three ancestors contributed, collectively, about 70% of the gene pool for the breeding lines. 'Harunanijo', a renowned good malting quality cultivar, showed average coefficients of parentage as high as 0.561 with breeding lines. Minor differences in the history of old ancestors had little effect on coefficients of parentage when they were computed using modern cultivars. A significant positive correlations (0.421) between the coefficient of parentage and malting quality was found.

WWW (World Wide Web) retrieval system for the existing research information database was developed. This system enabled direct access to the database which was constructed on the DBMS(Database Management System). To retrieve the database, the SQL-statement was described in the server-side program which was called by WWW. With the WWW retrieval system, it was possible for a great many users to access the database through a simple procedures. This system had many merits for users, but it required no modification on the structure of existing database, so the database could be easily served on the internet.

A new version (ver4.5) of NAPASS, which is a nation-wide market information database for vegetables and fruits, has been developed through experimental running tests on the Agricultural Extension Information Network (EI-net) operated by the Japan Agricultural Development and Extension Association. The running tests indicate that major application field of market information of vegetables and fruits in agricultural extension center are (1) competitive supplier analysis and (2) market trends analysis. The menu structure and major function of the version 4.5 of NAPASS are outlined in this paper. The distribution of access time to NAPASS is also analyzed based on the access log of past one year.
