A database of crossing records of wheat cultivars was developed using a Prolog-KABA interpreter. Five ancestors contributed, collectively, 59.4% and 7 ancestors contributed 66.9% to the gene pool for cultivars developed by Kyushu Natl. Agric. Exp. Stn. Cluster analysis based on coefficients of parentage between possible pairs of 16 cultivars revealed that these cultivars formed three clusters relating to the predominant parents. Cultivars which related to 'Asakazekomugi' had low values of flour whiteness, showing that 'Asakazekomugi' had a poor combining ability in quality though it was a high yield cultivar and used as cross parents extensively in Japan. Cultivars which related to 'Kanto 107' had high maximum viscosity values.

To contribute toward the introduction of new resource crops to rural agriculture, image databases of resource crops were developed in Macintosh HyperCard and the Internet WWW (World Wide Web). First, color images of 61 resource crops were degitized into Macintosh and using them an image database stack was built using HyperCard 2.0J and ColorizeHC 1.0. This database stack was transfered into a WWW image database. The transfer from HyperCard stack to WWW database seems easy and useful to increase database accessability. Availability of the database was also imploved using FORM tag functions of HTML.

A BBS (Bulletin Board System) on the WWW (World Wide Web) was developed. The system has been implemented on Sun OS4.1.1, FreeBSD386(98)2.05, Linux 1.2.13 and NextStep Rel3.2j for INTEL Processor. Because the system is based on the httpd-CGI (Common Gateway Interface), Perl and UNIX standard commands, the portability is quite high not only for other UNIX systems but also PC-oriented systems such as Windows95 and WindowsNT. In addition to normal reference and contribution on the BBS, one can search for the past titles by free keywords and link his/her new contribution to a specific contribution. The chain of those linked contributions can be easily followed by a command. One can also attach multimedia information such as images and sounds or links to other sites on his/her contribution. This is the most characteristic feature of this BBS as compared with the NetNews or the ordinal BBSs of PC communications. It is easy to add a new category (classification based on the contents of the contributions) to the BBS. The only software that one needs to use the full functions of this BBS system is a WWW browser.

Ways of informatiozation to activate agriculture and regional communications were investigated by the analysis of the questionnaried surveys on the core farmers of a region. As results, the following quide lines are suggested for such informatiozation:
    1. The purpose of the informatization should be clarified to solve a specefec problem of a region within a short or middle period.
    2. Advisory staffs for the informatization should be reared especially in branch offices of the Agricultural Cooperative Association or the Mutual Laid Association.
    3. The advisory staffs train the regional inhabitants who wish to perticipate or are interested in informatization of their region in order to bring up human capitals for the informatization.

The farmers demands for information was investigated by the interviews on the members of a local personal computer club for famers. The results suggest that the expectations of the farmers for centralized information processing in the Agricultural Information Center is low because the farmers consider that a personal computer is powerful enough to perfom most of the tasks at home. Therfore, it is concluded that the center should function as a information provider rather than the present plans.
