This paper seeks to spotlight the actual conditions of foreign book selection and collection in the university libraries.
The source items were drawn from the 1974 edition of
Union Catalog of Foreign Books, compiled by the National Diet Library.
The matter for investigations are as follows; author, publisher, place and year of publication, and form of publication by subject and language.
The results of analysis can be summarized as follows;
1) In any case natural science books, especially theoretical ones, tend to be processed promptly than others.
2) Books in the field of cultural sciences, tend to be individual works and commercial publications, and the promptness of acquisition is not asked for.
In many cases, books are required which were published many years before.
3) In the field of social sciences, joint authors and corporate bodies as authors are eminent. This comes from the reason that the publishers of this field usually tend to be international organizations, international corporations, or government organizations, and that the centents of books are apt to be statistics or reports.
4) In the field of natural sciences, the ratio of commercial publications exceed social sciences.
University academic society is prominent.
“Proceedings” is prominent.
Newly published books are mostly concerned in this field.
Both languages and nations of publications are limited, and as for the language, books of Russian language are prominent, and as for the nation of publication, the Netherlands is distinguished.
