In the course of screening antibiotics, a streptomyces No. 658 strain was found to produce a new antifungal antibiotic which inhibits especially the growth of Piricularia oryzae.
The morphological properties of Streptomyces No. 658 strain is reported in another paperM1). The antibiotic is designated as bramycin because its crystalline form is hexagonal plate.
In this report, the isolation and properties of bramycin are described.
A strain, Streptomyces No. 658 was isolated from a soil sample collected in Fujiyoshida city. It was found that this strain produced a new antibiotic, bramycin. In the previous paper1) were reported the isolation and properties of bramycin. The present paper deals with the taxonomic studies on the No. 658 strain which was named Streptomyces diastatochromogenes var. bracus.
A new antibiotic, Ferramido chloromycin (FACM), has been isolated from fermentation broth of streptomyces AS 13 of our collection which contains organisms isolated from the soil of U.A.R. The antibiotic is a polypeptide containing sulpher, chlorine and iron.
FACM is mainly active against gram positive bacteria and fungi. The antibiotic is soluble in ethyl alcohol, n-butyl and other higher alcohols; sparingly soluble in water and insoluble in ethylacetate, butylacetate, benzene, chloroform, petroleum ether and diethyl ether.

It has been reported1, 2) that the hot water extract of bamboo grass, Sasa albomarginata Makino et Shibata, possesses significant anticancer activity against some types of subcutaneously transplantable mouse tumors without toxic symptoms and that the active substance exists in polysaccharide fraction.
As shown in the previous paper, the substance possessing anticancer activity was insoluble in ethanol, non-dialysable and not absorbed with cation- and anion-exchange resins.
The present studies are concerned with further purification procedure, based on anticancer activity against Ehrlich carcinoma and sarcoma 180, and physical and chemical properties of the substance.
