Antibiotic 5879 has been found to be identical with bicyclomycin which was reported simultaneously with antibiotic 5879.
Streptomyces sp. strain No. 5879 was classified as a new species and was given the name
Streptomyces aizunensis.
Streptomyces aizunensis is different from
Streptomyces sapporonensis which produces bicyclomycin.

Sulfobenzylpenicillin (sulbenicillin)-BGG conjugate was shown to be highly reactive with anti-sulbenicillin-BSA serum. This conjugate was, however, not reactive or was only slightly reactive with anti-benzylpenicillin- and anti-ampicillin-BSA sera produced in rabbits. The immunological specificity of sulbenicillin seems to be dependent on the acyl side chain of the molecule, while, its immunological cross-reactivity seems to be dependent on the 6-aminopenicillanic acid moiety in the structure of penicillin. Also, with other penicillin derivatives, similar evidence was obtained. Immunodiffusion studies revealed that two precipitin bands developed between several penicillin-BGG conjugates and anti-penicillin-BSA serum. Since these precipitin bands do not correlate with BGG and BSA used as carrier, the bands are probably formed by the specific immunological reaction between penicillin and anti-penicillin serum. Furthermore, specific reactivity of sulbenicillin is also demonstrated by the development of passive cutaneous anaphylaxis test.

A new antibiotic designated as antibiotic AB-64 inhibiting gram-positive bacteria was isolated from a rare Actinomycete. The producing strain was classified as
Actinomadura roseoviolacea var.
rubescens. Antibiotic AB-64, obtained as red powder, has a molecular formula C
26H
21NO
9(MW 491.46), and seems to be a new heteroaromatic compound based on its physical and chemical properties.

The effect of bleomycin on in vitro T7 DNA transcriptions catalyzed by phage T7-specific and
Escherichia coli RNA polymerases was investigated. It was observed that T7 RNA polymerase was more readily inhibited by the antibiotic than
E. coli RNA polymerase. The possible mechanism which would explain the differential inhibition of the transcription was discussed.

Macarbomycin is an antibiotic produced by
Streptomyces phaeochromogenes, inhibitory mainly against Gram-positive bacteria including drug-resistant strains and with low toxicity. It is readily soluble in water and relatively stable over a wide pH range. Its antibacterial activity is markedly reduced by serum albumin. The antibiotic shows a moderate curative activity to staphylococcal infection in mice. When intravenously injected into mice, macarbomycin is excreted slowly. It is apparently not absorbed as such from the alimentary tract. By long-term oral administrations to baby and juvenile monkeys, macarbomycin promoted growth with no signs of toxicity.

The effect of bleomycin on the molecular integrity of SV40 DNA was determined under various conditions by taking advantage of the fact that a single scission produced in such a superhelical form of DNA could be clearly manifested by analysis of samples with centrifugation in alkaline sucrose gradients. Conditions were found where the reaction velocity, the rate of disappearance of the characteristic form of DNA, depended on the concentration of bleomycin as well as on the reaction time. In contrast to general enzymatic reactions, bleomycin activity was greater at 0°C than at 37°C. The optimum pH was 9.1 while no activity was observed below pH 6 or above pH 13. Additional DNA, irrespective of its source, inhibited the reaction, while RNA had no effect. Cu++ ion at 1 mM almost completely inhibited the reaction while 2-mercaptoethanol at 1 mM stimulated the reaction by about 20-fold. No sulfhydryl compound was included in our standard assay system. EDTA at 10 mM showed no effect.
