Histochemical observations on the repair process of connective tissue in the Arthus phenomenon were carried out. Connective tissue repair process may be classified to six phases as follows. Namely, a) tissue necrosis b) stadium of fibloblast proliferation c) stadium of ground substance and Ag-fiber proliferation d) stadium of mast cell proliferation and collagen synthesis e) maximum stadium of collagen fiber formation f) complete stadium of repair process. Bundle formation of Ag-fibers was presently stainable with van Gieson's stain in the presence of mast cell. The actions of mast cell have not yet been Known. However, it may be seen to have intimate relations with collagen fiber formation. By administration of Glycyrrhizine to the Arthus phenomenon, leucocyte infiltration was decreased, and fibrin infiltration was increased. After 48〜72 hours, fibrin was entirely disappeared, and perivascular infiltrations of lymphocytes were remarkable. In the granulation tissue, mast cells were dominantly increased, with large protoplasma and great store of metachromatic granules, and bundle formations from Ag-fibers to collagen fiber were abundant.
