Comparative studies were made on the properties and mode of action of plaque-forming cell suppressive factor (PFC-SF) to sheep red blood cell (SRBC) in sera from patients with pulmonary cancer, sarcoidosis and pulmonary tuberculosis, respectively. The results obtained were as follows: 1. PFS-SF(s) contained in sera from patients with pulmonary cancer, sarecoidosis and pulmonary tuberculosis, were heat-stable at 56℃ for 30 minutes and non-dialyzable. 2. Immunosuppressive activity of PFS-SF(s), by ammonium sulphate fractionation of sera, was present in only supernatant fraction in sarcoidosis and pulmonary tuberculosis and in both supernatant and precipitate fractions, especially in γ-globulin rich fraction, in pulmonary cancer. 3. This suppressive effect of PFC-SF(s) was not based on cytotoxicity against thymus and spleen cell. Mice injected with these sera had not significantly change of rates of carbon clearance and no suppression of lipopolysaccharide-simulated nonspecific antibody formation to SRBC, when compared to mice injected with saline. This suppression occured only when these sera were injected before and similtaneous with SRBC antigen, but subsequent injection of these sera had no effect. 4. This suppression was remarkable at high antigen doses. 5. In vivo duration of immunosuppressive effect of these sera was long in pulmonary cancer, shorts in both sarcoidosis and pulmonary tuberculosis.

Occupational dust asthma was allergologically and hematologically studied. The subject patient was engaged in manufactureing Chinese quince and Rosewood furnitures. 1. Intracutaneous test, Prausnitz-Kustner test, both using Chinese quince or Rosewood timber dust extract as antigens, and inhalation test using Chinese quince extract gave positive reactions, When heated serum from the patient was used, PK reaction was negative. 2. Basophilia developed during frequent asthmatic attacks but the number of basophils returned to normal during attack-free periods. Blood basophil count was markedly reduced following inhalation of the dust extracts, but was normalized as the provoked asthmatic symptom was relieved. 3. It was noticed that basophils, eosinophils and monocytes migrated to the sites of positive reaction to Chinese quince or Rosewood timber dust extracts. 4. Addition of Chinese quince extract, reactive basophils were increased and the number of basophils was greatly reduced.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the function of adrenergic receptor and brnochial responsiveness to acetylcholine in subjects showing remission of childhood asthma for more than 3 years (remission group). The response to subcutaneous epinephrine and the threshold amount of acetylcholine was examined in each of 8 subjects of the remission group, asthmatic group and control group. 1. There was no remarkable difference amongst the 3 groups as to the effect of epinephrine on the pulse rate and plasma free fatty acid level, which is mianly influenced by β_1-adrenegic receptor function. 2. The degree of response of diastolic blood pressure, serum glucose level and peripheral eosinophile count, which is believed to manifest the function of β_2-adrenergic receptor, was greater in the remission group than in the asthmatic group, and approximated that of the control group. 3. The remission group showed less responsiveness compared to the other two groups in systolic blood pressure which is thought to reflect α-adrenergic receptor function. 4. The mean of the threshold amount of acetylcholine was 7127μg/ml in the reemission group and 1708μg/ml in the asthmatic group, which was statistically significant. All of the control group showed more than 25000 μg/ml in threshold amount of acetycholine.

The T-cells bearing receptor for Fc portion of IgG (FcR) were found to suppress the growth of lymphoid cell line having FcR in the presence of immune complexes. This phenomenon was tentatively named as"immune complexes dependent T-cell mediated cytotoxicity (IDTA)". T-cell from rheumatoid arthritis (RA) usually showed cytotoxicity without further adding immune complexes, while T-cells from normal individuals operated only when T-cell were treated with heat aggregated IgG or sera from RA which contain immune complexes. Therefore, the presence of immune complexes seemed to be essential for his phenomenon, and T-cells from RA have already bound immune complexes in vivo and thus thought to show direct cytotoxicity. The presence of FcR on both T-cells and target cells seemed to be prerequiside for this phenomenon, since IDTA disappeared if FcR of the target cells was blocked in advance by aggregared IgG, and since target cells which have not FcR were resistant.

The authors report case of a 48-year-old female who visited to the hospital for treatment of dyspnea of bronchial asthma. She was given an intravenous injection of 200 mg hydrocortisone sodium succinate. Within a short time she suddenly complained of chest choking, and severe dyspnea, her countenance became pale and cyanotic, and she lost consicousenss. Her pulse and blood pressure were unobtainable for a few minutes. Sera obtained from the patient next day after the shock were used to sensitize the skin of two normal subjects. The passively sensitized sites were tasted with hydrocortisone sodium succinate, and positive reaction were obtained. No intravenous reaction was obtained with the use of the solvent"Paraben"alone, which was well known as a hypersensitive agent. The authors suggested that intravenously administrated hydrocortisone sodium succinate could surprisingly produced and immediate type shock-like reaction in sensitive individuals and the reagins against the drug could be demonstrated by the passive transfer method.

Functional defects of thymic reticuloepithelial cells (TRC) in NZB mice have been investigated using T-cell differentiation and tumor cell rejection in nu/nu mice. One week after intraperitoneal injection of incubated TRC (5×10^5, 2.5×10^6) from NZB and control ICR mice into nu/nu mice, mammary carcinoma cells (1×10^6, 1×10^7 respectively), originated from C3H mice, were transplanted subcutaneously. Forty days later all nu/nu mice were sacrificed, tumors were measured, and Thy 1 positive spleen cells and NTA were investigated. As the other control, mouse fibroblasts instead of TRC were used. In the cases with 5×10^5 NZB -TRC, Thy 1 positive spleen cells increased respectably, yet 1×10^6 tumor cells could not be rejected. In the cases with ICR-TRC, Thy 1 positive spleen cells returned to the normal levle, and a half of the cases rejected tumors. The cases with 2.5×10^6 ICR-TRC rejected 1× 10^7 tumor cells completely, while only two out of five NZB-TRC cases rejected tumors. In the control cases with fibroblasts, any increase in Thy 1 positive spleen cells was not observed, and all cases allowed conspicuous growth of tumors. It was suggested that NZB-TRC retain a considerable capability in endowing Thy 1 determinant, but have defective ability to reconsitute cellular immunity for T-deficient mice.

Five cases suffering from occupational apple pollinosis were reported. This is likely to be the first paper on this illnes in Japan. The subjects consisted of 34, 37 and 48 year old males, and 38 and 43 year old females. They engage in appled cultivation over 20 years, and more than 10 years had elapsed until their illnes appeared. Their symptoms, including rhinorrhea, sneezing, lacirmaton, and itching in congunctival sac, were used to appear during the apple pollen seraons, and were aggravated by engaging in artificial pollination. No cases complained of either pharyngolaryngeal symptoms or attacks of bronchial asthma. The intradermal test for apple pollen extract gave doubtful or positive reactions. The nasal provocation test with allergen disc and the Prausnitz-Kustner test showed positiver reactions in all cases.
