The predatory behavior of Leucauge magnifica was studied. This species employed five predatory sequences: seize-pull out, bite-pull out, bite-wrap, wrap-bite, and wrap. Attack wrapping was used to subdue various types of prey such as grasshoppers, damselflies, ants and stinkbugs, which may be large and/or dangerous prey. Furthermore, living ants were more frequently immobilized by wrapping than dead ants. It suggests that attack wrapping is an effective method to immobilize large and/or dangerous prey.
Five orb-weaving species of the families Tetragnathidae and Araneidae are newly recorded from Taiwan. These include tetragnatid species Leucauge argentina (Hasselt 1882), L. tessellata (Thorell 1887), Mesida gemmea Hasselt 1882 and araneid species Eriovixia excelsa (Simon 1889), E. sakiedaorum Tanikawa 1999. The tetragnathid genus Mesida is recorded from Taiwan for the first time. The morphology of these five orb-weaving species are described and illustrated, and the synonyms and distribution accounts are given in this paper.
Twelve species of the genus Achaearanea belonging to the family Theridiidae are recorded from Japan. A key and illustrations of the species are given. A new species, A. ryukyu, is described. A. simulans (Thorell 1875) is recorded from Japan for the first time. A. ungilensis Kim & Kim 1996 described from Korea is synonymized with A. japonica (Bösenberg & Strand 1906).
Three gnaphosid species are reported from Japan. Zelotes bifukaensis sp. nov. is described from Hokkaido. Zelotes kimwha Paik 1986 and Aphantaulax seminigra Simon 1878 are recorded from Japan for the first time. The genus Aphantaulax is newly added to the Japanese fauna.
Eleven new species of the genus Coelotes from Okinawa, Miyako, and the Senkaku Islands in the Ryukyus are described: Coelotes keramaensis, C. tonakiensis, C. aguniensis, C. miyakoensis, C. senkakuensis, C. motobuensis, C. shimajiriensis, C. iheyaensis, C. yambaruensis, C. izenaensis and C. kumejimanus.
Following seven new species of the genus Coelotes from the Amami and the Tokara Islands in the Ryukyus are described: Coelotes oshimaensis, C. tokunoshimaensis, C. tokaraensis, C. insulanus, C. nasensis, C. akakinaensis, C. kakeromaensis.
Larinia bonneti Spassky 1939 is newly recorded from Japan. This species can be easily distinguished from the other Japanese congeners by the smaller size (body 3.84-5.00mm long; 4.45-12.25mm in other species), the roundish weakly sclerotized epigynal scape, and the large tegular apophysis and the elongated conductor of male palp.
