Was bin ich?"

Klaudios Ptolemaios's (2nd. century A. D., Alexandria) musical psychology (Harmonika, III/5-7) deserves some attention. In chapter 7 a clear comparison is made between τουοι and psychic conditions (ηηθ), but here are found three peculiarities. 1. A kind of inconsistency-tonos in Harmonika means two separate (though interrelated) things : A) pitch-key and B) mode. Here the text seems to refer to the tonos A, whereas in the Book II it is the tonos B that was postulated. 2. Shift in argumentation-at the beginning of this chapter the correspondence made is between modulation of tonoi and transformation of mind, but later it shifts to the one between tonoi themselves and various states of mind-the idea of variation is absent. 3. The whole description is abstract. Now Ptolemaios's musical psychology and musical cosmology (III/8-16) are symmetrically constructed, in which the analogue to chapter 7 is chapter 12. This chapter, where the seven tonoi are likened to the seven parallels of latitude, contains two peculiarities completely similar to those present in chapter 7 (1 and 2 as above indicated). They were required from the context in which this chapter 12 is situated. Thus in the light of its relationship to chapter 12, the structure of chapter 7 can be fully explained, together with the inconsistency of its tonos idea. The basic character which penetrates the entire Harmonika, that is Ptolemaios's strong inclination for system, will account for the abstract nature of the chapter.

Serlio's Book III is the first printed and illustrated book on antique edifices. It was a very practical source book for architects and their patrons. In contrast with quattrocento artists, Serlio comprehended the remains accurately. However it was based on the common knowledge of Raphael's assistants in Vatican. Serlio was greatly influenced by his contemporary architectural tendency even when he wrote on antiquities. In this book, some edifices with central plan, which is one of the most important idiom in Roman Renaissance architecture, are emphasized. His views on each remain based on his own taste, which I call "decent classicism". Some remains were neglected or censured since they were against his taste.

0. The Noh-play is an art of performance realized in the theatrical relation between the actor and spectators. Zeami calls the aesthetic value of the performance "Flower". There are three fundamental kinds of "Flower" as follows. 1. The "Flower" of Body (態の花) This "Flower" appears in the sensuous qualities of the actor, especially, sweet voice and charming posture, which only the younger possess. But as he grows older, he loses this transient beauty. 2. The "Flower" of Mind (心の花) This "Flower" comes out at the dimension of performance which harmonizes Mind with Body. At this stage of harmonized Mind-Body attained through the discipline, the actor presents the graceful figure of the Body and expresses the profundity of the Mind. At the climax of the play, spectators sympathize with the deep passion of the personage, contemplating the elegant figure and movement of the actor. Then spectators experience the beauty called "Yugen". 3. The "Flower" of No-Mind (無心の花) During the course of performance, the actor comes to lose his consciouness controlling the Body and techniques and reach the dimension of No-Mind. No-Mind is the creative subjectivity in human nature. At this stage of performance, the most splendid "Flower" blossoms out.

The subject in studying Oguri school which has been handed down from Sotan to Soritsu is the ambiguity of its style and genealogy in Muromachi "suiboku-ga" (black ink painting) circles. Concerning this problem, there is a good reason that art work and research materials hardly remain. But, in my conception, it is the main reason of the ambiguity that Oguri school painters had little school consciousness of its own. The attitude to painting of Soten, Sokei and Soritsu is, first of all, to inherit the "hitsuyo" (painting style) of Sung and Yuan at painters. So, it seems that Oguri school painters could not found its own style. From this point of view, the relation of painting between Sotan, Sokei in Kyoto and Soritsu, otherwise called Geial whose works are stamped with the seal of "Geiai", in Wakasa District is examined.

According to Wittgenstein's thought the groundless 'form of life', which consists of language games, can let some being belong to art. The concept of language game, at first confirmed in "Investigations", denied both the thought of the separation of language and world and the solipsism derived from a private language theory, so that it must be admitted that there is an inner relation between language and world and that language is essentially public : language, where language games are playing themselves is closely connected with the world in terms of pragmatics. Thus the language game concerning the word 'art', art-game, is situated in an art-world founded on a form of life, where some being is constantly recognized as a work of art in terms of a certain stable 'deep grammar' determining an art-game. If the stability of a 'deep grammar', though necessary, were perpetual, no artistic innovation could take place. The innovation in art, similar to those in other language games, is supposed to suddenly arise 'among' inner related language games at a deep grammatical level. But so far as we faithfully follow Wittgenstein, the following conclusion cannot help being reached : the innovation comes just from the opacity of a 'surface grammar'.

In the context concerning "the experience in Milan" in the book VII of Confessions, there are the stages which Augustine passes from iudicare on the meaning of the contents of libri Platonicorum, through iuvenire veritatem, consequently to the correct understanding of malum. This process is thought to be related to the true interpretation. Confessions, as we understand, aims at the interpretation of scriptura. The orientation of interpretation is indicated in the books X-XIII in the following way ; 1) the internal approach to Truth as the Judge (consulere veritatem), 2) the response of Truth (dicere, docere), and 3) the hearing of the voice in the self-disclosure of Truth (audire). This orientation, clearly indicated in the book XIII (ch. 29-30), is basically coincident with the way to inventio in the book VII. So, we admit that the light added to consulere-audire characterizes this inventio. Then, there are two phases of light-to grasp the light itself (ch. 10) and to grasp by the light (ch. 17)-, which correspond to those of Truth. The light in ch. 10 signifies the unable-to-be-grasped (invisivilia) or the undefined (infinitum) as the ultimate object. And the light in ch. 17 signifies the clear statement (illuminatio) of the ground for interpretation. With the phases of light, Augustine explains the inventio of the orientation of interpretation.

Literary studies have always been led by a question ; "what is the meaning of the work?" And literary theories have also been assumed to be the servants whose task is to provide instruments to help the better interpretation of a work as the ultimate purpose of study. The traditional theorists, identifying this meaning of work with the author's intention as the origin, have attempted to reconstitute it in various ways : until the 20th century, Literature was nothing but the example of Humanity, the storeroom of Truth and the bearer of Value, made by the great masters. Therefore, it used to be believed that to elucidate their secrets was the holy duty of literary studies in general. However, all this was fundamentally reversed after the Structuralism, for it demonstrated sufficiently that a text itself has no center and is multiple from the outset, separated from the domination of the author. And then, the activity of the reader has recently become decisive for literary studies. In this essay, surveying their limits, we examine these theories of reading (hermeneutics, reader-response criticism, Rezeptionsasthetik...) which seem to shape the main stream after the structuralism.
