In this paper, I would like to focus on large and sophisticated scenes depicting different Paradises of Buddha in the early Tang period (618-781 A.D.), examining to what extent the wall paintings of Dunhuang Mogao grottos were technically drawn and how the changes in artistic techniques affected the pictorial structures. At Mogao grottos of the early Tang period, under-drawings ("patterns"-stencils or other tracing techniques were used) were prepared before the actual painting, and, then, traced onto the walls, so that the motifs of the wall paintings would be the same size and shape as the "patterns". In the first half of the early Tang period (618-712 A.D.), "patterns" were used primarily on faces of minor deities, which were randomly located on the picture plane of the wall paintings. In the latter half of the early Tang period (712-781 A.D.), in addition to the lesser deities, the use of "patterns" also expanded from the face to the whole body of the attendant Boddhisatvas, which always appeared in a certain area on each picture plane. Through this change of artistic technique, the pictorial structure of the wall paintings became fixed, giving the impression of the structure with a more perfect symmetry.

Aesthetic phenomenon spread in Britain in the 1870s and 80s. Aestheticism is the view that works of art should be judged by strictly aesthetic criteria and that their value has nothing to do with their moral, political, or religious utility. But aestheticism had another aspect which had a strong influence on people's life-style and taste, particularly of the middle classes. 'Art Industry' took a significant role in this phenomenon with various products labelled 'aesthetic' and 'art'. One of major industries in this period was the manufacture of Decorative Tiles. From surveys of tile catalogues from 1840s to 1910s, the greatest variety of designs and 'Art Tile' designs were made in the 1870s and 80s. Many of them have light and elegant expressions. Particularly 'Art Tiles' have a naturalistic expression using hand-painted techniques. By coincidence the housing boom took place at this time. Wealthy middle class families were moving to new houses. The advice supplied in handbooks on aesthetic home decorating was based on the assumption that domestic decor should express personal chracter. The tiles were adopted as one of ways to make their houses beautiful. Tile industry in this period produced many variations of design and offered products for the public to find a taste.

The art magazine Valori Plastici, issued from 1918 to 1921, has decisive importance in Italian art between the Wars. It stimulated the tendency of "return to order" to appear as Novecento movement. Carlo Carra wrote many articles for the magazine and his metaphisical works were often reproduced in it. His discourse emphasizing the "<<italian principle>>" shows some parallelism with M. Sarfatti's. That "<<principle>>", however, as far as it means the ability of artists who discover the essences of objects and construct them into works, had been manifested in 1916 in his writings about Giotto and Uccello revalued from modern point of view. But in Valori Plastici years he tried to justify himself in the name of his race. The word "metaphisical" seems to be a coupler of these attitudes. On the other hand, the fact that his metaphisical works riproduced in Valori Plastici were rivisioned possibly not so much later is a proof of his intention to make his own painting in harmony with his discourse. Since the revision has been done toward some kind of classisism.
