Since the invention of cinema, it has increased in the faculty for expression in such a short time as sixty years or so. From silent picture to 'talkie', with the adoption of technicolor, it has made progress toward the present wide screen in order to meet the requirements which lurked in itself from the beginning. The cinema is the kind of art which really consists in seeing. To be precise, whatever it expresses must be perceived, first of all, by the sense of vision. Natural sounds, music, words and all others must be taken up as a matter of visual concern. After all, we should notice that cinematic vision is so peculiar that it possesses another entirely new construction in itself.

There are three factors which acted upon the formation of film art ; the technical, the economic and the artistic. These three factors successively discharged their essential functions. So, we can devide the first period in three stages. The technical stage can be regarded as the pre-history of film art. Two others can not be separated, because the development from one to another was only gradual. Then, it is necessary to clarify the subject which unifies these two stages. Because, all the history must be regarded as the development and metamorphosis of a certain subject. This subject is the "Reinfilmisches Sehen", which may correspond to Fiedlers' "Reines Sehen" in visual art. From Lumiere to Griffith, it is the process of it's formation, and, after Griffith, it is the process of it's own development.

In the contemplation of works of art, we feel ourselves sink into metaphysical profundity, that is, works of art have fathomless depths, which makes it possible for us to sink from the foreground of works (perceptible objects) into the background (the vitality of works). So the profundity of works is the a priori basis which joins the foreground and the background together, and it gives works of art their transcendental structure. The intention of this research is to throw light upon this transcendental structure of works of art as the problem of ontological synthesis, and to lay the foundation of the metaphysical experience which works of art give us.

Jan van Eyck's invention of oil painting is only a legend today, since it was evidently in use before his days. But the change of the unhandy earlier use into the systematic in his art was quite remarkable. His pursuit for oil painting against difficulty suggests that he was anxious for the effect of it in order to realize his sense of vision in his drawing. It can be clearly testified by comparing his paintings with his contemporaries' .I conclude that no other painter has ever made such effective use of the oil painting for his purpose. It is just that we should restore Jan van Eyck's honor for his origination of oil painting.
