Department of Hydrocarbon Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University A specific cooperative action between molecules is very important in biological systems. Generally, as the size of the molecule increases, the higher cooperative functionality is given in the molecule. The functionality plays roles in both biochemical reactions and vital phenomenon; such as molecular recognition, binding, incorporation, high catalytic activity of enzyme, selective and active transport, etc.
Recently, some biological molecules having functionalities are popularly synthesized and some chemicals having capabilities of specific cooperative actions are available to obtain commercially. Those materials shall be used for biophysical research. In this number, the following materials are made as a special edition.
Polyelectrolyte (Norio Ise and Tsuneo Okubo)
Oligopeptide (Shumpei Sakakibara)
Oligonucleotide (Tsujiaki Hata)
Cyclodextrin (Takashi Kuge)
Crown Ether (Michio Hiraoka)
Cyclophane (Iwao Tabushi)
