This paper introduces recent developments in the networks of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) that is a paradigmatic model for transportation phenomena. These networks are categorized into two types of structures: series connection or parallel connection. For each structure, we present characteristic behavior of the systems, with analytical methods. Based on these recent results, we discuss future possibilities and issues on this topic.

We discuss the phenomenon of tsunami run-up on land to realize the tsunami inundation warning system, especially focusing on the modeling of the effects of a building. To realize the tsunami inundation warning system, we need more accurate inundation prediction of tsunamis and we have to obtain this prediction by real-time tsunami inundation simulation. In this simulation, the effect of buildings is represented by Manning's roughness. However, there are several methods to determine this parameter. The choice of these methods makes the difference of tsunami simulation and the inundation prediction. In this paper, we propose a new method of determining the Manning's roughness using tsunami observation data. First, we state the shallow-water equations as dominant equation to realize the tsunami inundation warning system. Secondly, the existing methods of determining Manning's roughness are described. Then, we explain the new method to determine uncertain Manning's roughness in such simulation using observation data. Finally, we show the application results of jackknife method that enables us to compare the performance and the robustness among proposed and existing methods.
