Task-based PBL is a education method based on the active learning. We have introduced a task-based PBL approach to a civil engineering education in our college since several years ago. The education gave generally good performances, but occasionally some problems occured. Therefore, our PBL program has been improved to prevent these problems from occuring. As the culmination, we have developed a original task-based PBL program by incorporating KJ method and peer assessments based on cooperative learning. The program leads our students to discover various subjects through the cooperative self-instructions, without leading by excellent tutors. This paper shows the outline and the performances of our PBL program.
Engineering Practice I is opened for the first-year students in advanced civil and environmental engineering course. This paper shows an activity of the students in the engineering practice. In this curriculum, mapping of stone-made Buddhism statues such as Koshinto and Umanori-Batokannon in Kisarazu City was conducted using QGIS, a free software of GIS. Through this activity, they could learn how to use the software and also contribute to the local community by mapping the local cultural assets.
It has been pointed out that overdiagnosis of autism and the revision to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders caused a rapid increase in the population of people with developmentally disabilities. In this paper, I explore how we should cope with this problem.
The purpose of this study was to examine the usefulness of rowing exercise (Rex) as an exercise to continue in daily life for elderly people with knee pains. Two voluntary women with knee pains whose ages were 83 and 84 participated in this study. The exercise was carried out by a rowing ergometer. Subjects performed 20-minute exercise program (10 minutes × 2 sets) from twice to four times a week in one month. The exercise intensity was set at moderate level or less, then RPE was 6 to 13. Subjects were measured physical fitness (grip strength, timed up & go test, timed 5-meter walking test) and investigated the perceptional feeling against exercise load by questionnaire. One subject showed increase on distance and intensity of Rex as training effect, and the other showed decrease of them. There was not a remarkable change in physical fitness of the subjects. Two subjects answered in the questionnaire that their knee pains had improved, and also one of them gave an answer about the improvement in the motion of knee-joint bending and extension. It was suggested that Rex might be beneficial as an exercise of elderly people with knee pains in daily life.
This paper is about the citizen interaction library nurtured in the community. In the liberal arts of Kisarazu National College of Technology, we value "the third place" that is not a school at home. As an attempt, we made a citizen interaction library, and named it "Minamachi Library". "The Minamachi Library" is made up of books donated by community residents. We, as well as to introduce towards the society this activity, Citizen interaction library as a commons, to discuss further development.
In this study, the effects of tomato-leaf trichomes for the spectral variations were investigated using laser-induced fluorescence method. As a result, leaves without the trichomes revealed that the fluorescence intensities of F490, F685 and F740 decreased when excited at 405 nm and those increased when excited at 385 nm. Although the rate of variations of F685 and F740 is in good correlation, it was found that the decrease rate is smaller for ΔF685.
In this paper, I introduce a certain method of reflection, and estimate its effectiveness. In recent years it is not said that some students have enough abilities concerning general writing skills, especially mathematical writing. So I am wondering how they can obtain these abilities. And then I have tried to perform my original method of reflection since October in the academic year 2016. I report what my original method of reflection is and its effectiveness.
We've been developing diagnostic techniques for plant growth based on fluoresce measurements. In this study, we investigated the changes of transmission spectra and fluorescence spectra in cherry tomato fruits due to ripening. Variation of the lycopene and the chlorophyll in the fruits were estimated from the changes in the transmission spectra. This result showed that the monitoring of the chlorophyll amount is necessary in order to evaluate the degree of ripeness for whole ripening period. While the logarithm of fluorescence ratio F685/F740 (defining this value as FMI: Fluorescence Maturity Index) and the chlorophyll concentration in the fruits had a good correlation. Therefore, by using FMI, the degree of ripeness in the cherry tomato fruits can be evaluated nondestructively from the fluorescence measurement.
In a new curriculum which has been executed in our college since April 2017, beginner's subjects of active learning for low age education in engineering are introduced at Grade 1. In the subjects, the beginners have some experiences to attempt at solving technical and simple problems with supports by upperclass students. The purpose of this subjects has required us to develop a new teaching materials for civil engineering. This paper shows the outline of developed teaching materials and the implementation result in half period.
We describe an experimental study on dynamics of fish schooling behaviors. There are very few paper about quantitative and practical information of fish school behavior properties. In order to obtain information of dynamical fish school behaviors, experiments with Japanese dace Tribolodon hakonensis and Ayu Plecoglossus altivelis were carried out. We calculated time series data of fish school radius from individual positon coordinate data. We confirmed that fish school radius fluctuation was 1/ƒ fluctuation.
Banda Aceh is the capital and largest city in the province of Aceh, the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, which is located on the northwestern tip of Indonesia at the mouth of the Aceh River. The city rose to international prominence in the Indian Ocean earthquake in 2004, which struck off the western coast of Sumatra. It suffered great damage in the earthquake and further damage when a tsunami struck shortly afterwards. An inspection of the old and new waste dumping sites was carried out in Banda Aceh. This report describes an improved design concept of waste dumping site in Banda Aceh after the big earthquake.
