The voucher specimens of the mosses (Leucodontaceae and Pterobryaceae) reported by
Suzuki & Iwatsuki (2012, 2013) and Suzuki (2017) as new to Japan were re-examined. As a result,(1)
Antitrichia curtipendula, (2) Jaegerina scariosa, (3) Nogopterium (≡ Pterogonium) gracile, and (4)
Nogopterium (≡Pterogonium) coreense were found to be excluded from Japanese flora. These reports
were based on misidentification of (1) Forsstroemia sp., (2) Isothecium subdiversiforme, (3) Forsstroemia neckeroides, and (4) Hypnum leptothallum, respectively. The plant as Nogopterium tsinlingense
from Japan was Pterogoniadelphus (≡ Felipponea) esquirolii. Nogopterium tenellum, described as a
new species, was newly synonymized with Homomallium japonicoaduncum. The proposal of recombination for three Leucodon species, i.e., L. brachypus, L. julaceus, and L. pendulus to the genus Pterogoniadelphus was not supported by leaf morphologies between the two genera and also molecular
phylogenetic analyses. Thus, the three species should be retained in the genus Leucodon.
