In quantometric analysis, though the cause of error is an important problem, fundamental and systematic studies on this subject have not so far been made.In this regard, the case of rapid quantometric analysis of iron and steel has been taken up to look into the analytical accuracy influenced by sample surface condition and sample setting technique with the results summarized below.
(1) If the sample surface is finished off with #80-#180 emery paper, the error on analytical results will become negligible. The surface had better be finished rough to a certain extent, for a discharge surface of such finish raises the accuracy of result.
(2) When the discharge is over small cracks, the result becomes less erroneous.
(3) If the electrode is so set as a part of the surface near the electrode becomes also a light source.the result will be very much affected by such setting.
(4) The discharge at 6-8mm away from the edge of sample surface gives the best result. On cast samples, because of possible cavities and uneven structure, the result obtained at the central portion of the sample may deviate largely from the mean value.
(5) The difference of ±2° in cone-angles of tungsten electrode does not affect the result.
