A high-current (34-220 A), short-lasting (<1sec) d.c.arc source was constructed for the spectrographic analysis of microsamples in argon atmosphere., The duration of the arc was controlled by the solid-state, pulse-counting network and the silicon-controlled rectifiers. The wave-form of the current was that of a rectified full-wave.
The preliminary experiments with this source showed that the spectral nature became spark-like as the current was increased. The signal to background ratios of lines were not so improved as Svoboda suggested with the increase of current more than 30 A.
