Diagnosis of Loxogramme is summarized as follows; rhizome with perforated dictyostele, scales of rhizome lanceolate to oblong lanceolate, unistratose and clathrate with dorsal protrusion, simple frond with distinct articulation and without distinct abscission layer in smaller species, sinuate epidermal cells of lamina are general type, venation is drynarioid type, or simple sagenioid type is small-leaved species, sori elongate and parallel to primary lateral veins, sporangia common with higher leptosporanigate ferns, and spores are both bilateral and tetrahedral type. Loxogramme is included in the Polypodiaceae, in particular being comparable with Colysis and its allied genera, in spite of the exceptional presence of the tetrahedral spores in this family.
