Noncommutative spacetime is a spacetime where its coordinates are considered to be not ordinary numbers but operators. The idea of noncommutativity in spacetime naturally appears in the context of superstring theory. Superstring theory is a theory which is a candidate of the theory unifying gravity and quantum theory. In this article, we will discuss some strange solitonic solutions found in quantum field theory in noncommutative spacetime and their relation to the superstring theory.

Jet quenching is one of the promising tools to investigate a new form of matter, the quark gluon plasma, produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC. We first review the spacetime picture of heavy ion reaction and the parton energy loss in dense matter. Experimental results for high p
T hadrons such as suppression of yields, azimuthal anisotropy and disappearance of azimuthal correlations are manifestations of parton energy loss in dense matter. By comparison of these experimental results with theoretical analyses, we deduce the properties of matter produced in the early stage of collisions. We also briefly comment on a possibility of creation of another form of matter, the color glass condensate.

An Emulsion Cloud Chamber has been widely used to study high energy cosmic rays. Recently, this detector has been extensively improved and developed to a Micro Segment Chamber (MSC). The MSC basically consists of a stack of thin and low-background emulsion film which can be used for high-speed image processing. A sophisticated image processing technique makes it possible to analyze a lot of emulsion films of a kiloton scale. Using this MSC, we have succeeded to detect v
τ events, and are going to start the OPERA experiment at CERN to search for v
μ-v
τ oscillation phenomena. In this article, we briefly introduce the performance and the balloon-borne MSC designed for observing cosmic ray electrons. We also discuss the possibility of searching for WIMPs using super-fine grain emulsion films.

Crystallization of a globular protein, lysozyme, was found to be enhanced in the medium of a lipid cubic phase. We propose that the confinement of lysozyme molecules to the nanoscale water channels in the cubic phase induces the enhancement.

Mobilities of ions in helium gas at low temperature have been measured by using of a drift tube apparatus cooled by liquid helium. We have found that mobilities of some molecular ions are lower than the polarization limit below 100 K of the effective temperature. This finding means that the momentum-transfer cross sections become much larger than the classical ones in the ion-atom collisions of lower energies than 10 meV. The reason of this phenomenon is discussed in detail.

The progress in femtosecond laser has enabled us to observe coherent motion of lattice vibrations and molecular vibrations in solids. Nevertheless study of coherent phonons in Si, which is an important material for modern devise application, is still missing. We report dynamics of transient interaction of electrons with phonons, followed by generation of coherent optical phonon, observed by using pump-probe technique with 400 nm, 10 fs laser.

A number of superconductors exhibiting anisotropic pairing have been discovered so far. In anisotropic superconductors, the attractive force originates from the l>0 component of the pairscattering amplitude. We provide a unified view on the microscopic mechanism of anisotropic superconductivity on the basis of the Fermi liquid theory.
