Properties of solids are determined by the microscopic structure where quantum mechanics stands. Throughout the 20
th century physicists have made progress in developing the methods to explore the microscopic world of materials. In the latter half of the 20
th century, starting with catching-up modes, Japanese solid-state physicists have been at some leading edges in the last decade. Traces towards the frontiers are briefly reviewed placing emphasis upon the material development and the investigation, and ways to go are mentioned.

The shortest pulse duration of an optical pulse breaks into the attosecond (1as=10
-18s) region from the femtosecond (1fs=10
-15s) region. Attosecond pulses are extreme ultraviolet (XUV) light and are generated through the process of high harmonics generation by nonlinear interaction between a laser electric field and atoms. Because attosecond pulses are harmonics of laser pulses, they have temporal and spatial coherence. Attosecond pulses can be applied not only to time-resolved spectroscopy but also nonlinear optics in the XUV and soft X-ray. Recently, we have succeeded in observing a nonlinear optical phenomenon in XUV and have characterized attosecond pulses with a nonlinear optical technique. In this article, the recent researches on the attosecond pulse generation and applications are described along with the details of our work.

The E704 experiment conducted at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory found a large single spin asymmetry (SSA), which has lead to a great extention of the framework for high energy processes based on Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The SSA reflects the chiral symmetry breaking in the strong interaction. Clarification of its origin requires formulating the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks and the quark-gluon correlation in the hadrons, which has become a hot and challenging subject in QCD. Experimentally, RHIC at the Brookhaven National Laboratory is measuring SSA at higher energy, and the measurement of SSA in lepton-nucleon scattering is also ongoing. This article is devoted to survey the recent development in the understanding of SSA.

Silicon clathrates are covalent bonded cage-like crystals composed of face-sharing Si
20, Si
24, and Si
28 polyhedra in which guest atoms are occupied. These compounds continue to attract much attention as new superconductors, unusual wide-bandgap semiconductor, and a new class of thermo-electric materials. Vibrational properties of guests and host lattice, and the guest-host interactions are studied by high-pressure Raman spectroscopy. By considering these results and high-pressure phase transitions of Si clathrates, we investigate their characteristics depending on guests and cage-structures.

New findings obtained by assembling nanomagnets are reviewed. This article describes their cooperative phenomena: phase separation and a ferromagnetically ordered liquid state in the assemblies with mobility; super-spin-glass ordering and soft-magnetism in the assemblies with randomness; super-ferromagnetism in the assemblies with periodicity. This article concludes with an outlook on future prospects in this field.

We have measured the half-life of (1)
7Be encapsulated in C
60 and (2) incorporated in Be metal using a HPGe detector with a time reference from a standard-time radio signal. We found that the half-life of
7Be in C
60 and Be metal were T
1/2=52.68±0.05 and T
1/2=53.12±0.05 days, respectively. This 0.83% difference between the EC rate in C
60 and in Be metal represents a strong environment effect on the
7Be EC capture rate, caused by the different electronic wave-functions near the
7Be nucleus inside a C
60 cage and inside metal Be. Since we have found a record-large environment effect on the decay constant it is our belief that these results will be very useful in further experimental and theoretical studies of environmental effects on radioactive decay.
