Compressive mode giant resonances such as isoscalar giant monopole resonances and isoscalar dipole resonances have been of great concern for 30 years because of its fundamental importance in nuclear physics. But due to the difficulties in the measurement it is only in these days after the clean measurements at RCNP that people begin to feel it will be settled. We report measurements of nuclear incompressibilities together with the experimental review of the compressive giant resonances.

The magnetic susceptibility, high field magnetization, and high field ESR measurements of Cu_3 (CO_3)_2(OH)_2 (azurite), which is a model substance for the diamond chain, have been performed using natural mineral single crystals. The magnetization curve has a clear plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization. This is the first experimental evidence of the 1/3 plateau in the diamond chain.

Atoms and molecules at surface can be moved by tunneling injection of carriers in scanning tunneling microscopy. We have demonstrated on Ge (001) clean surface that the surface superstructures are reversibly and locally controlled by selecting the sample bias voltage in the STM operation. The hot carriers injected to the surface electronic states induce two fundamental processes, creation and non-local motion of a phase-boundary of the two superstructures.

We have performed high field and multi-frequency ESR measurements of finite length S=1 antiferromagnetic chains in Y_2BaNi_0.96Mg0.04O_5. Owing to the high spectral resolution by high fields and high frequencies, observed ESR signals can be separated into the contributions of the finite chains with various chain lengths. Our results clearly show that the edge spins actually interact with each other through the quantum spin chain and the interaction depends on the chain length N.
