Superconductivity in iron pnictides was first reported on LaFePO in July 2006, followed by a report of LaFeAs_<1-x>F_x with T_c=26K in February 2008. These discoveries have rekindled the vital superconductivity research like the fever in high-T_c cuprates in late 1980s, and led to the publication of more than 1,000 papers to date. Although a variety of iron-based superconducting materials have been reported, these materials can be classified into 5-types of crystal structures. Each of them commonly contains the square lattice of Fe ion with a formal charge of +2, and each Fe^<2+> ion is tetrahedrally coordinated by pnictgens (As or P) or chalcogens which are located above and below the iron square lattice. In the present article, we describe the current status of these 5-types of iron-based superconducting materials and correlation between T_c and local structure with a background research on transition metal pnictides led to the discovery.

The discovery of the iron-based superconductor LaFeAs (O_<1-x>F_x) by Kamihara, et al. had a great impact for condensed matter researchers, and a great deal of effort has been applied to understanding the physical properties and superconducting mechanism of the new resulting family of iron-based superconductors. In this article, the authors review their normal-state and superconducting properties investigated by four different experimental techniques (transport, photoemission, neutron scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance), and discuss the relationship between experimental results and the unique band structure of the iron-based compounds.

A theoretical overview of the iron-based superconductors discovered in 2008 is given to reveal the features characteristic of the new material and how they differ from the cuprate high-T_c superconductors. We first explain that the effective model obtained from first-principles electronic structure for the iron-based material is intrinsically multi-band, and how this brings about interesting and sometimes complicated features. Then we focus on the spin-fluctuation mediated pairing, among other mechanisms proposed. We finally review how the theoretical results agree with the existing experimental results, and point out important problems for future prospects.

Quantized vortices, which are defined as defects in the phase of superfluid order parameters, involve the low-energy quasiparticle excitations. In particular, the order parameter in p-wave fermionic superfluids exhibits a non-trivial topological structure due to their internal degree of freedom. The noticeable result is the appearance of the zero energy quasiparticles, which behave as Majorana fermions. Here, we demonstrate the stability of the zero energy Majorana states near a p-wave Feshbach resonance in ultracold atomic gases.

The structure change of nuclear systems as a function of excitation energy is discussed. In the nuclear systems, protons and neutrons are considered to perform independent particle motion in low-lying states close to the ground state, however α cluster structure appears around the α-threshold energy to decay into subsystems. Until now, such cluster states have been investigated in light stable nuclei with equal numbers of protons and neutrons, and gas-like nature of α cluster structure has been well studied. In the present study, we discuss in neutron-rich nuclei how the gas-like cluster structure changes when excess neutrons are added. We show the appearance of cluster states with geometric shapes due to the "glue effect" of the excess neutrons.

The mass of hadrons such as the nucleon and the pion originates from the "strong interaction." What happens if the hadron matter is heated to a temperature comparable to the strong-interaction energy scale? We could know a theoretical answer with the solution of QCD that is the fundamental theory of the strong interaction. Also, we could have an experimental confirmation with the heated matter in the laboratory. The theoretical and experimental attempts have continued for almost 30 years, that is, the quest for the "quark-gluon plasma." I will make a theoretical review over the latest understanding of the QCD phase transitions with some historical consideration.
