This paper reports an empirical research into the use of communication strategies by the Japanese learner of English in dialogue. The methods of experiments in this field used to be very artificial. However, the experimental situation the present research uses is closer to real communication because of the presence of an interlocutor, the ALT. A new classification system was devised to organize the strategies, which consists of Global Strategy and Local Strategy. Global Strategy is the strategy using general expressions or changing the way of expressing the phrase using a different phrase which conveys the same meaning. Local Strategy is the strategy in which the subject looks at detailed points of the task and sticks to them rigidly. The subjects are divided into two groups according to their proficiency level of English: High proficiency level group (High Group) and Low proficiency level group (Low Group). The differences in the use of the type of the strategies and characteristics of strategy-use between the High Group and the Low Group could be found. The differences were statistically analyzed.
