【Background】 Cardiac rehabilitation after cardiac surgery has been reported to improve ADL and improve life expectancy. However, it is difficult to continue supervised exercise therapy in hospitals and facilities after discharge. 【Methods】 We examined 44 of the 92 cardiovascular surgeries performed at our hospital in which exercise therapy was prescribed based on postoperative CPX outcomes and home-based cardiac rehabilitation was continued after discharged. They were divided into the Active group (31 patients) who had exercised for 90 minutes/week or more after discharged, and the Non-Active group (13 patients) who had exercised for less than 90 minutes/week. Postoperative outcomes, and exercise capacities in early (2-4 weeks postoperatively) and late term (3-6 months postoperatively) was compared between groups, respectively. 【Results】 There was no significant difference between groups in preoperative factors, surgical procedures, operative time, postoperative complications, or postoperative hospital stays. There was no significant difference in exercise capacity between groups in the early term, but in the late term, peak VO2 and AT VO2 were significantly improved in the Active group (P=0.006, P=0.004). 【Discussion and Conclusion】 It was suggested that the home-based cardiac rehabilitation after cardiovascular surgery may improve postoperative exercise capacity by continuing exercise for more than 90 minutes/week.
