    It is often documented that geochemistry has been established in the West in early 1920s. Since the same period or earlier, books and literatures on the developing geochemistry have been imported to Japan. Jun-ichi Takahashi, who met Vernadsky in Paris in 1924 and later translated his textbook "La Géochimie" to Japanese language in 1933, has studied such imported publications and has used "Chikagaku" as a Japanese equivalent for "Geochimistry" since early 1920s. Separately, Yuji Shibata, who is respected as a founder of Japanese geochemistry, was inspired by Vernadsky's "La Géochimie" (1924) and contributed an article introducing geochemistry as a promising new discipline to a newspaper "Kokumin-Shinbun" in 1926. In this article, he coined "Chikyukagaku" as a Japanese equivalent for "Geochemistry". Since then, the term "Chikyukagaku" became popular in Japanese scientific community. Although Takahashi claimed that the Japanese equivalent for "Geochemistry" was not "Chikyukagaku" but "Chikagaku" in his review paper in 1929, it was too late. Finally, Takahashi had to change his mind to use "Chikyukagaku" on the title of the Japanese translation version (1933) of Vernadsky's "La Géochimie".

    In this article I am intending to describe how researchers proceeded geochemical works under limited availability of facilities, instruments etc. in ninety fifties and sixties when the after-effects of the war still continued: researchers were forced to separate minerals by handpicking, to make their vacuum systems by themselves with glass-blowing, to use mass-spectrometer designed for analysis of gas molecules for isotope analysis. Among the people I was acquainted with, Drs. Hitoshi Sakai, Akimasa Masuda and Naoki Onuma, all of them have already passed away, showed distinguished performances in studying geochemistry during that period. They overcame many difficulties by carefully choosing their main theme of study, and by elaborately designing the studying procedures. I will show some rarely-talk-about stories hidden under their published work. In addition to the stories about the work of the legendary researchers, I will show performances of some other researchers.

    My life as an isotope scientist started in 1967, when the enrichment of 15N along a marine food chain in the western North Pacific Ocean was reported in my DS Dissertation. After 46 years, my newest paper which was published in March, 2013 concluded that the ratios of trophic fractionation of carbon and nitrogen isotopes (Δδ15N/Δδ13C) throughout marine and terrestrial food chains could be regarded to have similar correlation, expressed with the following linear regression line:

    δ15N=1.61δ13C+44.3+ [ecosystem specific constant].

    with standard errors of [±0.41] and [±9.7] for the slope and the intercept, respectively. After this long journey of isotope research, I finally reached to a hypothesis on "ISOTOPICALLY ORDERED WORLD" with emphasis on amino acid synthesis, which I will describe in this article.

    After finishing the Ph.D. course at University of Tokyo in 1979, I started my research carrier as a research associate to Professor Edward Anders at the Enrico Fermi Institute of University of Chicago. During a two and a half years stay in Chicago, I engaged in neutron activation analysis (NAA) of lunar samples and meteorites for the first half term and then switched the research subject to noble gas mass-spectrometry. Based on NAA of CI chondrites, two papers were published in 1982, one of which is focused on the elemental fractionation in CI chondrites. We confirmed two types of fractionation caused by either aqueous activity on the CI chondrite parent body or nebular processes (possibly condensation). Another paper was entitled "Solar-system abundances of the elements". Here, I reviewed these two papers and presented several significant characteristics observed in the elemental abundances of CI chondrites.

    There are two distinct points of view which might be called the ideal and realistic pictures of science: One appears to be concerned only with discovery and contemplation of truth. The other concerned with only its usefulness (practical application). Throughout any plan of scientific advance it would be necessary to keep a just proportion between fundamental and applied research and to maintain at all times the closest contact between them. In this paper the author presents three examples that show social function of geochemistry. One is the research providing the ground water pollution caused by civil engineering. The other is earthquake prediction by means of behavior of crustal gases erupted from mineral springs and active faults.
