E)-vinyl sulfones have syn-conformation which seems to be the cause of “syn-effect” found in the conversion of (
E)-vinyl sulfones to the corresponding allyl sulfones with a base under mild conditions. Syn-conformation of a terminal olefin in solid state was also confirmed.

Highly coheterotactic poly(methyl methacrylate-
alt-styrene)s have been synthesized by using boron trichloride excess to methyl methacrylate at low temperature below −60 °C. The highest value of their coheterotacticities in triad sequence was about 90 mol%, which is the highest in heterotacticity among the polymers ever reported.

The local structures of lanthanoid(III) chloranilate complexes have been studied by the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The Fourier transformed EXAFS spectra suggest that the complexes are rigid three dimensional network structures. The distances between a metal and coordinated atoms estimated from EXAFS spectra are correlated to the ionic radii of lanthanoid(III) ions very well.

This organic film held between two cover glasses was formed by means of an evacuated hot-press apparatus. Poly(parabanic acid) (PPA) forms transparent homogeneous composites with lithium and sodium salt (LiClO

4) up to 30–60 wt% of the salt in the composite. The composites show electrical conductivity of 1.7 × 10
−5 S cm
−1 at 50 wt% of Li[CF

3] at 20 °C. The composites are thermally stable up to about 180 °C and temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity obeys Arrhenius type equation in most cases with activation energy of 0.6–1.0 eV.

Three benzenetellurinic mixed anhydrides, i.e., benzenetellurinyl acetate, trifluoroacetate, and trifluoromethanesulfonate, have been found to be mild oxidizing agents for various substrates such as thiol, phosphine, acyloin, α-hydroxy ester, catechol, hydroquinone, thiourea, and thioamide. The reactions towards the last two substrates are highly chemoselective, depending on both the reagent and substrate.

Syntheses of (+)-africanol (

2) were attempted by reductive radical cyclization of (1

S)-2-(4′-butenyl)-1,5,5-trimethyl-bicyclo[5.1.0]-3-octanone derived from (1
R,2
S,4
S,8
S)-4-alkoxy-1,6,6-trimethyl-tricyclo[6.1.0.O
2,4]nonane. This cyclization gave (+)-
1 and (+)-
2 as minor components, together with trans fused epimers as major components.
