The use of yttria as an oxidative coupling of methane catalyst leads to relatively high carbon monoxide selectivity. This behavior, identical to that found with thoria, is believed to be due to the absence of carbonate formation and the stability of surface superoxide on these two oxides. The addition of high temperature stable alkaline earth carbonates decreases CO synthesis activity while increasing overall catalytic activity.

The chromatographic separation of La(III) from other light rare earth metal ions [Ce(III), Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III)] was achieved by using polyacryloylacetone as a stationary phase. High resolutions were obtained when pH of the eluent (HCl) was decreased stepwise.

The interlayer surface of γ-zirconium phosphate was chemically modified by the reaction with ethylene oxide. The resulting layered organic derivative can be intercalated with LiClO
4, forming solid solutions over a pretty wide range of the compositions. The ionic conductivities and the Raman spectra of the solid solutions have been studied.

Substituted
o-trimethylsilylphenylacetylenes were synthesized by
o-metalation of phenylacetylenes with complex reagent of butyllithium and
t-BuOK, and were polymerized in the presence of a tungsten catalyst giving deeply colored poly(arylacetylene)s. Relationship between the structure of monomers and polymers was examined.

Hydrophobic polysaccharide derivatives bearing palmitoyl or cholesterol moieties form self aggregates in an aqueous solution. The critical concentrations to give the polymer aggregates depended on the degree of substitution of the hydrophobic moiety. Cholesterol-bearing pullulan showed a stronger binding for hydrophobic guest molecules and higher colloidal stability compared with the corresponding palmitoyl-bearing one.
