A series of 3-benzylidene-
D-camphor derivatives has been synthesized in order to examine the second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency along with the transparent wavelength region. Through reflection powder measurement, 3-cinnamylidene-
D-camphor having a cutoff wavelength of 350 nm, shows the efficiency 10 times as large as that of urea.

The binding of heme to sperm whale myoglobin-(57–96)-tetracontapeptide (
1) was investigated. The appearance of a peak at 414 nm in the difference spectrum between a
1–heme mixture and heme indicated the formation of a complex. The circular dichroism spectrum of the mixture showed that an α-helical structure is induced and stabilized by the formation of the complex.

Polycondensation of octadecyl esters of aromatic amino acids (L-TrpC18, L-TyrC18, L-PheC18) can be markedly accelerated in the monolayers on the aqueous subphase of pH 8. The reaction rate was ten times or more faster than in the bulk solid. There exist optimum molecular packing and orientation for the polycondensation. The resultant poly-ammo acids take α-helix and/or random coil conformations.

Peralkylated 3,4-bis(alkylidene)-1,2-disilacyclobutanes prepared by convenient synthetic route were quantitatively converted to 3,4,7,8-tetrakis(alkylidene)-1,2,5,6-tetrasilacyclooctane (twist and chair 1:1 mixture) by Pd-catalyzed reaction. In the presence of unsaturated compounds, this disilane metathesis reaction was inhibited to give double silylation products. The reaction pathways are highly dependent upon electronic factors of unsaturated compounds and the catalyst.

Partial substitution of Cu, Zn, Nb, Ag, Sb, and In for Fe in FeSi
2 significantly varied the structure of the sintered samples. The thermoelectric power increased with decreasing relative density of the samples, while the electrical conductivity decreased at the same time. However, microstructural modification by increasing the size of the particles composing the samples improved the thermoelectric figure of merit through increase in the thermoelectric power and decrease in the thermal conductivity without affecting the electrical conductivity.

X-Ray analysis of
trans-1,2-bis{
meso-[nickel(II)octaethylporphyrinyl]} ethene has revealed that the compound has nonplanar structure and the nickel-coordination planes of porphyrin rings are close to perpendicular (72.5°) to the plane of the central double bond. Both porphyrin rings have saddle-shaped structure due to the steric repulsion between ethyl substituents.

D-amino acid oxidase, a flavoprotein, was immobilized in a conductive redox polymer prepared on Au-electroplated glassy carbon electrode by an electrochemical polymerization of mercaptohydroquinone. The enzyme-modified electrode possessed of an excellent selectivity for D-amino acids and showed fast response and good stability with the substrates.
