tert-butyl peroxypivalate. The radical trapping technique employing 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-2,3-dihydro-1
H-isoindol-2-yloxyl has been used to study the decomposition mechanism of

For the purpose of utilizing ESDIAD (Electron Stimulated Desorption Ion Angular Distribution) as a real time probe for surface chemical processes, we have developed a new instrument which can measure ESDIAD images and time of flight (TOF) spectra of desorbed ions in temperature programmed surface processes. TOF measurements are carried out to identify the mass of desorbed ions and to determine their kinetic energy distribution. This temperature-programmed (TP)-ESDIAD/TOF system was used to observe the decomposition processes of methanol on Ru(001)-p(2 × 2)-O. A halo pattern from the methyl group of methoxy species was observed at 100-200 K by the use of CH

The vanadium silicalite-1 catalyst (VS-1) has been found to include highly dispersed V-O moieties having a tetrahedral coordination in C
3v symmetry, which exhibits a photoluminescence spectrum attributed to the radiative decay from the charge transfer excited state. Also, the photocatalytic reduction of NO into N
2 was found to proceed much more efficiently in the presence of propane than with the direct photocatalytic decomposition of NO without propane. The dynamic quenching of the photoluminescence spectrum by the addition of NO and propane indicate that the excited state of the V-O moieties plays a significant role in this photocatalytic reaction.

The oxygen migration reaction between sulfur atoms in the monooxide of 1,4-bis(methylthio)benzene preceeds in the presence of CF
3CO
2H. The reaction of 1,4-bis(methylthio)benzene with its bis-sulfoxide also gives the corresponding monooxide at room temperature. A two-point bis(dithia dication) dimer is proposed as an intermediate.

Ferricenium cations showed excellent DNA cleaving activity and cytotoxic activity. Such activities depend on the acyl group introduced into the cyclopentadienyl ring.

Three different types of silacyclopentadienyl anions have been obtained in the reduction of 1-methylsilole
1 with excess lithium. Treatment of lithiated solution with dimethylchlorosilane gave 2,5-bis(dimethylsilyl)silole derivatives
3a and
3b, and with trimethylchlorosilane gave 1-trimethylsilyl-1-methylsilole derivative
4 at an early stage, and 1,1-bis(trimethylsilyl)silole derivative
8 at a late stage. Silole 1,1-dianion
7 has been formed via silole 2,5-dianion
2 and silole 1-anion
5.

In this study, we found that, in perylene microcrystals, luminescence peak position from free-exciton state was gradually shifted to high energy side with reducing the crystal size, even if the microcrystals were fabricated by different kinds of preparation techniques. The life time of luminescence from self-trapped exciton state became shorter when the crystal size reduced. The main reason was estimated to be based on the change of lattice state.

The photorefractive effect of the liquid crystal polymer, poly 4-methacryloyloxyhexyloxy(4′-nitrobenzylidene)aniline doped with (diethylamino)benzaldehyde diphenylhydrazone (DEH) and 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF), was investigated using a two-beam coupling experiment. A diffraction efficiency of ∼5% was obtained under an applied electric field of 20∼30 V/μm.
