Spiral waves consisted of deposited Ag and Sb were propagating two-dimensionally on a copper electrode surface while the electrochemical co-deposition of the metals was proceeding. A time course of this electrochemically driven wave-propagation was phenomenologically similar to the one driven by a homogeneous non-linear reaction in Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction-diffusion medium. The Ag/Sb co-deposition also formed a layered structure in the depth, finally it made a 3-dimensional super-structure on the electrode.

A method for the induction of the agglomeration of different kinds of particles by the ultrasonic irradiation in the water was studied. This method has been proven to be applicable to the separation of photo-catalyst particles from the drainage of photo-oxidation process. The catalyst particle was titanium oxide with the average diameter of 3 µm. The agglomeration was observed when the ultrasound with the frequency of 26 kHz and the power of 80 W was irradiated and a certain amount of glass beads with the diameter between 33-44 µm were added. The catalyst particles deposited on the glass beads, and then settled together with the glass beads leading to the liquid-solid separation. It was also found that the addition of the glass beads has also enhanced the agglomeration among the catalyst particles themselves.

Diels-Alder reactions of carbonyl dienophiles with dienes and aza Diels-Alder reactions of imines with a diene have been successfully carried out using scandium tris(heptadecafluorooctanesulfonate) (Sc(OSO

3) as a Lewis acid catalyst in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO
2). It was revealed that the length of perfluorocarbon chains of the scandium catalyst was an essential factor for the catalytic activity in scCO

Condensation reaction of 2,7-dibromotropone with 1,3-bis(mercaptomethyl)benzene afforded 2:2- and 1:2-condensates. Their structures were determined to be new troponoid tetrathiacyclophanes by X-ray crystallographic analyses; 2:2-condensate had a 1,2-alternate conformation and was well-stacked through π-π interactions. 1:2-Condensate had approximately a cone conformation. 2:2-Condensate formed a complex with Hg(II) ion.

Styrylpyrazine amphiphile
1 in aqueous dispersion showed a remarkably slow aggregation process. Evidence supporting the “translation” layered structure of
1 having face-to-face stacking in the aggregate was obtained by the blue-shifted fluorescence spectra by the aggregation in contrast with the red-shift for stilbene amphiphile

5 prepared by mixed condensation of tetraphenylphthalonitrile and 4-phenylthiophthalonitrile in the presence of a copper salt, show spectroscopic, electrochemical, and molecular model indications which suggest varying degrees of non-planar distortions of the Pc plane and unexpected S

Layered polymer/calcium carbonate (CaCO
3) composite films have been successfully obtained by alternate repetition of spin-coating of polysaccharides and thin film crystallization of CaCO
3 in the presence of an acid polymer. SEM images show layered structures consisting of brick of the inorganic crystal and mortar of the polymer.
