Novel fluorophores, 3,4,6-triphenyl-α-pyrone derivatives, were synthesized and their spectroscopic properties have been investigated. In the solid state they show intense greenish-yellow fluorescence, but not in solution. It is concluded that the 6-phenyl group is fixed at an angle of about 26° to the pyrone plane in the solid state by molecular packing and this fixation is required for this unique fluorescent property.

The effect of the viscosity of room temperature molten salt (RTMS) electrolyte has been investigated on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Both the short circuit photocurrent and conversion efficiency are increased with decreasing the viscosity of RTMS as in the case of conventional electrolytes. The conversion efficiency of 2.1% observed for the cell of EMIm-F·2.3HF is the highest value reported for all the DSSC consisted of RTMS.

The catalytic activity and durability of methane-steam reforming under a low H
2O/CH
4 molar ratio was studied on an Ni/Al

3 catalyst prepared using water-in-oil (w/o) microemulsion. The initial activity of the prepared Ni/Al
2O
3 catalyst was higher than that of an impregnated one. The impregnated catalyst deactivated rapidly and lost its activity at a time-on-stream of 15 h due to severe coking (> 30 wt%-carbon after 20 h). In contrast, the catalyst prepared using w/o microemulsion sustained its activity for 40 h, and gave little coke (<0.3 wt%-carbon after 40 h) on the catalyst.

−27 esu which is about a factor of 3 smaller than the β value (1.30 × 10
−26 esu) of bare CdS nanoparticles whose surface is not modified by organic groups. This difference is interpreted in terms of a two-level model approximation derived from molecular chromophores, when considering the contribution of molecule-like scatterers at the particle surfaces.

An orthorhombic LiMnO
2 having a high capacity was hydrothermally synthesized at 170 °C from Mn
3O
4 obtained through autoxidation route. The LiMnO
2/Li cell demonstrated the initial reversible capacities of about 210 mAh (g-oxide)
−1 at 30 °C. After several initial cycling, the cell showed stabilized cycling behavior (175 mAh g

9-Anthroyloxyl radicals are generated from photocleavage of the N-O bond of
N-(9-anthroyloxy)-9-fluorenylideneamine and 1-(9-anthroyloxy)-2-pyridone in acetonitrile. They are much less reactive in decarboxylation, addition to olefins, and hydrogen-atom abstraction than benzoyloxyl and 1-naphthoyloxyl radicals, and supposedly undergo intramolecular addition to the ipso position to give α-lactonic spiroanthracenyl radicals.
