The iron phthalocyanine (FePc) monolayer adsorbed on a graphite surface showed a remarkable activity for the SO
2 reduction in aqueous conditions. The highest activity was observed at strongly acidic solutions and decreased with a pH increase due to the H
+ limitation of reduction. Only SO
2 and HSO
3- are reducible forms. The reduction mechanisms at strongly and moderately acidic conditions were suggested. The SO
2 reduction current was independent of the surface coverage and the ppb level detection was possible with amperometry.

The effects of ionic strength on the sorption of Eu(III) on kaolinite in the presence of humic acid (HA) were examined using a batch method. Eu(III) sorption increased with increased ionic strengths in the pH range of 6 to 10, but was insensitive to ionic strength in the pH range below 5. Adsorption of HA onto kaolinite also increased in the pH range of 6 to 10, indicating that the increase in adsorption of Eu(III)-humate complexes is a predominant process for the increase in Eu(III) sorption.

Change in the corrosion rate of iron under a high magnetic field was examined by determining corrosion potential shifts and polarization curve measurements. With increasing magnetic flux density, the electrode potential shifted to the anodic side. This was induced by a cathodic diffusion current increment via a microscopic stirring effect in the local magnetohydrodynamic flow, which arose from interaction between the electrochemical corrosion current and the applied magnetic field.

Zirconium complexes bearing phenoxy/cyclopropyl-, cyclobutyl- or cyclopentyl-imine chelate ligands, when activated with methylalumoxane (MAO), produced vinyl-terminated low molecular weight polyethylenes (
Mw<5000) with higher activities than Cp
2ZrCl
2 at 25 °C. The complex having a cyclobutyl group provided the lowest molecular weight polyethylene (
Mw 2100).

Ultrathin films of (TiO

3+)
n and (TiO

3+)
n composites were prepared by the surface sol-gel process and the subsequent chemisorption/coordination of Eu
3+ ions. Amorphous TiO
2-gel layers were found to act as sensitizer for efficient emission of Eu
3+.

Europium and ytterbium catalysts obtained by impregnation of active carbon with lanthanide metal (Eu and Yb) solutions in liquid ammonia were found to be active for the dimerization of ethene. Ethene was selectively dimerized at 423–473 K to yield butene isomers with selectivity of 10–62%. The active catalysts were characterized as lanthanide nitride formed by the thermal decomposition of its amide.

Catalytic and chemoselective glycosylation between novel “armed” and “disarmed” glycosyl
p-trifluoromethylbenzylthio-
p-trifluoromethylphenyl formimidates was effectively performed in the presence of a catalytic amount of TfOH and MS 4A in CH
2Cl
2 at -78 °C. In addition, it was noted that highly 1,2-
cis or 1,2-
trans stereoselective synthesis was established when the above glycosylation was carried out at -78 °C in
tBuOMe or EtCN, respectively.
