It was found that 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS), which is known to aggregate in a one-dimensional direction in water, acted as a template for electrochemical polymerization of aniline on ITO electrode. Examinations using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and UV–vis spectroscopy established that J-aggregated TPPS molecules were entrapped in the resultant poly(aniline). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation established that poly(aniline) grew up to a nanosized rod-like structure, reflecting the aggregation structure of TPPS. It is a very novel and important finding that poly(aniline), which has been believed to result in only “rigid” film, can be morphologically controlled using a “template method”.

A novel Zn(II)–OH complex surrounded with hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction groups has been prepared as a structural/functional model of carbonic anhydrases, and characterized by X-ray structure analysis and ESIMS and
1H- and
13C-NMR spectroscopies. The complex has been found to exhibit a reversible binding of CO
2.

The formation of H
2O and OH groups on an active Pt/SO
42−–ZrO
2 (Pt/SZ) catalyst was observed upon hydrogen adsorption at 523 K, whereas only OH groups were formed on an inactive Pt/SZ catalyst.

Crown ethers with a planar chiral (1,3-η
4-diene)tricarbonyliron unit were prepared. They revealed a good chiral recognition ability for α-substituted benzylammonium salts (
Krel = 1.3–2.0). Ligand substitution of the iron tricarbonyl moiety with triphenylphosphane inverted the chiral selectivity.

The title cyclophanes as a potential fragment of double-helical π-conjugated system were synthesized, and the spectroscopic and crystallographic characterization shows the strained nature of the π-system; variable-temperature NMR spectra also reveal that the cyclophanes exist as an equilibrium mixture between the
meso- and
dl-forms in solution.
