Room temperature ionic liquids have been employed for the first time as novel and recyclable reaction media for the chemoselective conversion of aldehydes into their corresponding 1,3-oxathio- and dithioacetal derivatives in excellent yields under mild and neutral conditions. A wide range of functional and protecting groups such as TBDMS, PMB, THP, MOM, benzyl, propargyl ethers, acetonides, carbamates and esters are survived under these reaction conditions. The recovered activated ionic liquids can be recycled for four to five subsequent runs with consistency in activity.

We report the fluorescence properties of oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) containing a base-discriminating fluorescent nucleoside, benzopyridopyrimidine (BPP), in hybridizing with RNAs possessing different bases opposite BPP. BPP-containing ODN selectively exhibited a strong fluorescence when the RNA base opposite BPP was A, whereas the fluorescence of BPP-containing ODN hybridized with RNA possessing G opposite BPP was very weak. BPP acts as a good base-discriminating fluorescent nucleoside for A/G single base alteration of RNA.

In a longitudinally detected ESR (LODESR) method, longitudinal (i.e., parallel to the static magnetic field) magnetization changes caused by on/off modulated ESR irradiation are observed. In this study, LODESR oximetry was newly designed so that a detection frequency was fixed and on/off modulation frequencies were varied. LODESR signal intensities when the modulation frequency was equal to the detecting frequency (fundamental harmonic detection) and when it was half the value of the detection frequency (secondary harmonic detection) were simulated at a constant detection frequency. Fundamental harmonic-to-secondary harmonic ratios (FSRs) were calculated by dividing the former by the latter. This simulation showed that FSR increased with the reciprocal of longitudinal relaxation time. LODESR measurements of phantoms containing triarylmethyl or a nitroxide radical that had been dissolved in 10 cm
3 of a physiological saline solution and various concentrations of oxygen were made at an ESR frequency of 280 MHz. It was found that the FSRs of both phantoms increased as the concentration of oxygen increased.

A reverse micelle-assisted route was reported to prepare ZnO nanorods from two different precursors, Zn(NH
3)
42+ and Zn(OH)
42−, respectively. The reverse micelles were used as microreactors, which lead into anisotropic growth of ZnO crystals during a simple solvothermal process.

A new complex [Ag(L)
2]ClO
4·2CH
2Cl
2 (
1) (L = 4′, 5′-diaza-9′-(4,5-dimethylthio-1,3-dithiole-2-ylidene)fluorene) was synthesized. It was confirmed by
1H NMR and X-ray structure determination that when the molecules crystallize out from solution, a conversion of molecular configuration occurs because of the strong intermolecular interactions.

The activity of Pt(0.5 wt%)/AlPO
4 for C
3H
6-SCR was found to be much higher than that of Pt(0.5 wt%)/Al
2O
3; although the selectivity toward N
2O of both the catalysts were comparable, the maximal conversion of NO to N
2 by Pt(0.5 wt%)/AlPO
4 was higher than that by Pt(0.5 wt%)/Al
2O
3, and moreover the temperature window of the former located in lower side than that of the latter. The superiority of Pt(0.5 wt%)/AlPO
4 was discussed on the basis of the results of XPS measurements.

A new ethylene polymerization catalyst system containing a phenoxy-imine ligated V complex and a MgCl
2-based compound has been discovered. Unlike ordinary V-based catalysts, the system exhibits higher activities at elevated temperatures, and the activity reached a very high value of 65100 kg-PE/mol-cat/h at 75 °C, representing the first example of a highly active, thermally robust V-based ethylene polymerization catalyst system.
