The study of near-infrared emission has shown that singlet oxygen (
1O
2) is generated via superoxide by the photocatalytic reaction of titanium dioxide (TiO
2) dispersed in solvents. The
1O
2 was deactivated on the TiO
2 surface and could not oxidize nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, which has no affinity to the TiO
2 surface. The generation of photocatalytic
1O
2 was enhanced in the phospholipid membrane, and a water soluble protein acted as an effective scavenger of the generated
1O
2. These findings suggest that
1O
2 generated by TiO
2 contributes to the phototoxic effect through the oxidation of the membrane protein.

The iridium-catalyzed hydrosilylation of alkynes in the presence of 4,4′,5,5′-tetramethylbiphosphinine (tmbp) has been explored. The hydrosilylation of alkynes in the presence of tmbp proceeds effectively to give β-(
E)-vinylsilanes highly selectively in moderate to high yields, whereas a similar hydrosilylation in the absence of tmbp produces β-(
Z)-vinylsilanes selectively. The stereoselectivity of these reactions suggests the importance of the electron-withdrawing properties of tmbp coordinated to iridium.

A novel sensing system for glucose-specific detection has been established based on a combination of a boronic acid and enzymes. To overcome the inherently low biding affinity of glucose toward boronic acids, glucose is converted into gluconic acid by the enzymatic reaction using glucose oxidase (GOx), and then complexed with a fluorescent boronic acid through the α-hydroxycarboxylate moiety. According to the present strategy, glucose concentration is exclusively determined among other saccharides in aqueous solutions.

The transport properties of (MeDH-TTP)
2AsF
6, which crystallized in the κ-type structure, were investigated and found to be semiconductive with a small activation energy. ESR measurements suggested that the insulating state below 40 K should be antiferromagnetic, similarly to the Mott transition system represented by quasi-two-dimensional κ-ET [ET = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] salts.

Two-dimensionally (2-D) networked gold nanowires have been prepared by a simple chemical reduction method using glycerol as capping agents. It was found that 2-D gold nanowires were more active than spherical gold nanoparticles on hydrogen generation from sodium borohydride solution.

Diastereo- and enantio-selective synthesis of 3,4-dihydropyran-2-ones from various silyl enolates and α,β-unsaturated ketones were successfully carried out by using cinchonidine-derived quaternary ammonium phenoxide. In this reaction, a synthesis of the two enantiomers was achieved by an appropriate choice of a substituent on the bridgehead nitrogen of cinchonidine.

Two 1,8-anthrylene cyclic trimers with acetylene or diacetylene linkers were synthesized by macrocyclization with the Eglinton coupling. These compounds have nonplanar and strained cyclic structures with significant bending deformations of acetylene carbons as revealed by X-ray analysis and DFT calculation. The effects of the molecular structures on the
13C NMR chemical shifts and the electronic spectra are discussed.

A new sensitive spectrophotometric method for human serum albumin (HSA), the main protein in urine, has been developed using Erythrosin B. The proposed method is not based on conventional spectral shift but on an enhanced absorbance of the protein–bound dye and suppression of reagent blank in the presence of Triton X-100. The detection limit for HSA is 0.06 mg L
−1 (S/N = 3), which is superior to conventional methods by a factor of 50–100. This is the first ever spectrophotometric method applicable for urinary protein even in healthy subjects.

We investigate the relative stabilities of tautomers of 8-oxoguanine (8OG) and guanine (G) comprehensively at various levels of theory up to MP4 and CCSD(T) in the gas phase. We find that the population of the enol form at C6 position in 8OG is higher than that in G at any level of theory which we used. This may partly account for the high mutagenicity of 8OG.

Michael addition of a 1,3-dicarbonyl compound to an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound was effectively catalyzed by heterogeneous
N,
N-diethylaminopropylated silica gel (NDEAP) in water under microwave heating. The reaction condition was mild, practical, and environmentally benign. The sustainable nature of the catalyst was exemplified by re-use up to 5 times.
