Using a new extractant,
N,
N,
N′,
N′-tetraoctyldiglycolamide (TODGA), the dependence of the distribution ratio on the ionic radii for M
II was investigated, and their relation with the structures of metal complexes were discussed. Ca
II (ionic radius: 100 pm) shows the highest
D values, and the
D values decrease with increase and decrease of ionic radius from 100 pm. The geometrical optimization by density functional theory (DFT) of M
II–TODGA complex suggests that the carbonyl oxygen has more affinity with metal than the ether oxygen, and the distance between the center of oxygen donor and the edge of cation corresponds to the van der Waals radius of oxygen atom. The most stable complex, as 1:1 complex, can be formed with Mg
II from DFT calculation, the complex becomes unstable with increase of ionic radius of M
II. This order is good agreement with the magnitude of
D for Ca
II, Sr
II, and Ba
II.

The long nanosecond pulse not only suppresses the disadvantageous broadening and deformation of spectral line profiles usually observed when short nanosecond pulses are used but also greatly suppresses the material removal from analyte surfaces. The latter is also an important advantage for the application to surface analysis.

The detoxification of water contaminated by antimony and its resource recovery are achieved by hydrothermal mineralization treatment. The treatment is based on the precipitation method of a mineral from aqueous media by imitating natural mineralization mechanism derived from activity of magma. The treatment could reduce Sb concentration in aqueous media, when the formed mineral was Ca
2(Sb
2O
7), which resembled natural mineral of Monimolite ((Pb,Ca)
2Sb

Direct electron transfer between chloroperoxidase (CPO) from Caldariomyces fumago and gold electrode has been achieved by layer-by-layer adsorption of CPO and polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PDDA) monolayers on a gold electrode. QCM frequency shift demonstrated monolayer formed during each adsorption. Electrochemical characterization studies show thin layer properties of these PDDA–CPO–PDDA films. The PDDA–CPO–PDDA ultra-thin films were stable, up to 97% electrochemical activity remained after two days storage in phosphate buffer pH 5.

Di-2-methoxyethyl azodicarboxylate (DMEAD) was prepared as an alternative of DEAD or DIAD for the Mitsunobu reaction. Removal of the hydrazinedicarboxylate generated from DMEAD becomes much easier owing to the polar and water-soluble property.

Ultrafine α-Fe
2O
3 nanoparticles with an extremely narrow distribution were prepared by microwave heating. The average diameter of the particles was approximately 7 nm. These nanoparticles were extremely stable in the colloidal state, even in the absence of stabilizers. The obtained α-Fe
2O
3 nanoparticles worked as a rechargeable electrode material. An initial discharge capacity exceeded 400 mA h g
−1 (cut-off voltage: 1.0 V).

α-Tocopheryl disaccharides such as β-gentiobioside, β-maltoside, β-cellobioside, β-lactoside, β-melibioside, and β-isomaltoside were synthesized by biological and chemical glycosylation, and their inhibitory effects on superoxide generation from rat neutrophils were examined.

Ta
2O
5-coated Pt electrodes prepared by electrodeposition of Ta and the subsequent calcination were found to possess a remarkably enhanced adsorption/desorption characteristic of hydrogen atoms in sulfuric acid solutions compared with bare Pt electrodes. This enhancement can be explained by a spillover–reverse spillover of hydrogen atoms adsorbed at Pt sites over the Ta
2O
5 surface.

Terpolymer of 1,8-octanediol, adipic acid, and
L-malic acid was synthesized via a lipase-catalyzed direct polycondensation in different organic solvents. The results of GPC show that an organic solvent possessing low polarity is a better organic medium for the lipase-catalyzed polymerization. The
1H NMR spectra of the obtained copolymer samples indicate that hydroxy groups of
L-malic acid do not take part in the polymerization reaction.
