trans-stilbene monomers bearing 4-alkylamino and 4′-phenoxy- or 4′-alkoxycarbonyl groups was carried out with an initiator in the presence of lithium 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexamethyldisilazide. Chain-growth polymerization afforded corresponding polyamides, whereas step-growth polymerization resulted in the formation of cyclic oligoamides.

A new square-shaped macrocyclic amide was prepared from

S4 symmetry. In this design, there is a central cavity approximately 7 Å in diameter and rigid aromatic rings and intramolecular hydrogen bonding help to reduce the conformational flexibility of the molecule.

We have reported that TiO
2 particles prepared in reverse micelles showed high photocatalytic activity in an amorphous rather than anatase state and that the amorphous state changes easily into the anatase state just by irradiating visible light. So we prepared Au/TiO
2 complex particles which included Au colloids in TiO
2 by the reverse micelle method. We found that Au colloids exhibited the sustaining effect of amorphous TiO
2 particles. Moreover, Au/TiO
2 complex particles showed higher photocatalytic activity than single TiO

CG sequences (CpG ODNs) can activate innate immune and thus be potentially useful for immune stimulants in therapeutic use. By hybridizing a CpG ODN having a (dA)
40 tail with poly(dT), we prepared a DNA duplex that multiple CpG ODNs are hanging from the duplex. IL-12 cytokine secretion reached the maximum at the composition that two to four CpG ODNs in one duplex. These phenomena can be rationalized by an allosteric or cluster effect, and the present clustered CpG system is the simplest and most elucidating tool to investigate the cluster effect of CpG ODNs.

In this study, we report that the coupling of 5-methylcytosine with 5-carbamoylvinyl-deoxyuridine-mediated photoligation caused the heat-induced transition from 5-methylcytosine to thymine. Deamination of 5-methylcytosine to thymine proceeded via the formation of cyclobutane dimer.

Hexagonal boron carbonitride (h-BCN) films have been synthesized on silicon (100) substrate by radio frequency plasma enhance chemical vapor deposition from tris(dimethylamino)borane (TDMAB) as a precursor. XPS and FT-IR revealed that the film with a composition of B
46C
18N
36 had sp
2 B–C–N atomic hybridization. NEXAFS suggested that the local structure of BCN showed different atomic orientations to the substrate.

1α-Helix hydrophobic polypeptide bearing spermine, which has similar amino acid sequences to the hydrophobic core in the native photosynthetic light-harvesting (LH) 1-α polypeptide from
Rhodospirillum (

rubrum, was synthesized. Interestingly, an enhanced photoelectric current was observed when BChl
a complexes together with the LH1-α model polypeptide were assembled onto an ITO electrode.

RNA aminoacylation, based on an adenosine transfer mechanism, was achieved by the intermolecular transfer of phenylalaninyl adenosine from a donor probe to an acceptor RNA. This method can be applied to a wide variety of unnatural amino acids for tRNA aminoacylation.

Synthesis and characterization of novel and environment-friendly inorganic yellow pigments were successfully realized. The pigments are composed of CeO
2, Bi
2O
3, and SiO
2, which are nontoxic materials with the potential to give brilliant color. These new materials have high thermal and UV stability; thus, they are ideal candidates for use as environment-friendly inorganic yellow pigments.
