A simple and mild method for the direct conversion of carboxylic acids to primary amides has been developed by using 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride (DMT-MM). The reaction proceeds by adding DMT-MM to a mixture of carboxylic acids and an ammonia source in methanol, 2-propanol, or THF without any additives. The present method is quite practical in that aqueous ammonia or ammonium chloride/triethylamine can be used as an ammonia source. Methanol or 2-propanol is an ideal polar solvent because it is inexpensive, can be removed by rotary evaporator, and solubilizes many kinds of polar or nonpolar compounds.

The magnetic-field-assisted solvothermal approach has been used in the shape-controlled growth of Te microcrystals. By applying a high magnetic field to the reaction system, the shape of obtained Te microcrystals could be changed greatly. Various techniques such as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy have been used to characterize the obtained products. The results show that the magnetic field plays a key role in the growth behavior of Te microcrystals. The possible cause of magnetic field effects is discussed.

Dynamic behavior of a fluorescent probe, a swallow-tailed perylene derivative (Spy-Hp) for detecting hydroperoxides was studied by fluorescence lifetime and transient absorption measurements. The MO calculations suggest the intramolecular charge transfer for Spy-Hp. The excited state lifetime of Spy-Hp is shorter than that of the oxidized form, which was caused by intramolecular fluorescence quenching. These results elucidate the mechanism of Spy-Hp for detecting hydroperoxides in biosamples.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-appended peptide with a binary sequence of hydrophobic and hydrophilic amino acids with 16 residues gave grain-like aggregate in aqueous solution. The peptide segment in the aggregate adopted β-sheet structure, while the peptide itself originally adopted α-helix structure. In the hydrophobic domain constructed by peptide segment, hydrogen bonding rearranged to give secondary structural transition. The α-helix/β-sheet transition simultaneously gave morphological transition from a grain-like state to a fibrous object.

The platelet texture characteristic of the blue phase collapsed when the sample was irradiated by a weak UV light source, while usual freezing of both blue phases I and II was obtained upon photopolymerization by a stronger light source. The phase destruction seems to be reflecting the robustness of the cubic lattice structure against external purterbations.

A novel electric-field-enhanced liquid-phase microextraction system based on hollow fiber membrane has been developed. By introducing the radially enhancing electric field into this system, it is feasible to accelerate the mass-transfer rate of analyte and shorten the equilibrium time. In the process, the extract time was less than 4 min, which is much less than that of traditional liquid-phase microextraction. Further study is in progress.

x catalysts prepared by coprecipitation are very active for CO oxidation at low temperature, and 100% CO conversion is obtained at −70 °C over the best catalyst; Adding a small mount of MnO
x in CoO
x–CeO
2 can improve the dispersion of cobalt oxide and ceria effectively, which leads to high CO oxidation activity.

In this paper, we investigated a convenient shape transformation of gold nanoparticles to nanodisks by UV irradiation in chloroform with the aid of protective agents carrying a triphenylene moiety, which absorbs UV energy and plays a role as a mask in directing the deposition of gold atoms at aspecific position.

Highly crystalline cubic indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles with narrow size distribution were successfully prepared directly in one step from a mixed solution of indium and tin salts by a solvothermal method with ethylene glycol as solvent. Also, size was easily manipulated by changing conditions, such as aging period and sodium hydroxide concentration.

The electronic spectrum of benzo[
e]pyrene (BeP) was recorded using resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy. A number of bands were observed and assigned to the origin band and vibronic bands of the S
1–S
0 transition. Ab initio calculations were performed to assign the vibrational structures in S
1. The origin band of BeP is well separated in energy from the origin band of benzo[
a]pyrene (BaP), an isomer of BeP, and so BeP and BaP can be readily distinguished by the REMPI method, despite having the same mass.

The hybrid nanogels were prepared by condensation of silanol groups grafted to cholesterol-bearing pullulan at ambient temperature and pH without any catalysts or organic solvents. This is a new method for preparation of organic–inorganic hybrid nanogels with dual network structures of both chemically crosslinked points with siloxane bonds and physically crosslinked hydrophobic association points.

The conjugate addition of indoles to 4-aryl-4-oxobut-2-enoates was achieved with FeCl
3 as a catalyst under mild conditions. The reaction was highly regioselective and afforded a variety of new 3-substituted indoles in good to excellent yields.

Hollow hexagonal fluorapatite (FHAp) nanoprisms have been successfully prepared via a template-free method with the assistance of Na
2EDTA/citric acid (CA) mixed chelating reagent. These novel hollow FHAp nanoprisms have an outer length of about 1 μm, an average outer diameter of 150 nm, and a shell thickness of about 50 nm. The effects of reaction temperature and chelating reagent on the formation of final products were studied. A possible formation mechanism for the hollow FHAp nanoprisms is proposed.
