Unlike the parent compound, the improved Hoechst probe, wherein two methyl substituents were introduced into the terminal phenol ring, is fluorescent in an aqueous solution at neutral pH, and showed a unidirectional wavelength shift in the fluorescence emission spectra on lowering the pH. Thus, the probe can be used as a blue/green color-changing fluorescent pH indicator in an acidic range.

The matrix-isolated IR spectrum was found to be different from either the IR spectrum of neat ionic liquid or the theoretically simulated stable 1:1 ion-pair spectrum. This observation may suggest that the vaporized ionic liquid has a certain structure different from either the liquid phase or theoretically expected ion-pair form.

The electrolytic properties of a lithium battery electrolyte based on triethyl(2-methoxyethyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide are described. Testing charge–discharge performance of the cell containing the lithium-binary phosphonium ionic liquid electrolyte showed excellent capacity and rechargeability, compared to the cell containing a comparative ammonium ionic liquid electrolyte.

Study of the NO decomposition activity of the Ruddlesden–Popper-type oxide Sr
3Fe
2O
7 doped with Ba and Zr revealed that Sr
3Fe
2O
7 exhibits a high NO decomposition activity. Doping Ba and Zr for the Sr and Fe sites, respectively, is highly effective for improving NO decomposition activity. A high N
2 yield of 72% is achieved at 1123 K and a N
2 yield of 32% is sustained under a 2.5% oxygen cofeeding condition.

A frozen-orbital analysis (FZOA) that has been proposed in order to analyze excitation between degenerate orbitals is applied to molecules with
Ih symmetry such as (B
12H
12)
2− and C
60. In the FZOA approach, the ordering and the energy splittings of the excited states involving degenerate orbitals can be understood through a simple and intuitive picture. FZOA results for molecules with
Ih symmetry also reveal that two general rules hold: (i) The highest transition among transitions between degenerate orbitals is dipole-allowed; (ii) The excitation energy of the highest transition is larger than those of the other transitions.

In order to develop a new supramolecular complex for use as an active drug carrier, we prepared complexes of an anionic liposome comprising poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG
n=50) monooleyl ether with folate-conjugated poly(amidoamine) dendrimers (FA-PAMAM). Regardless of the ratio of FA-PAMAM to liposome, the complexes were stably dispersed in water. These results suggest that the PEG chains play an important role in the dispersion stability of the supra-complexes, preventing the complexes from aggregating.

This document will communicate that the Au/TiO
x photocatalyst shows a high activity with tremendous efficiency for the degradation of volatile organic compounds, such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and phenol, with visible light. Also, we found that photocatalytic degradation of phenol could take place in dry air as a carrier gas but not in Ar atmosphere.
