Mesoporous titania spheres with a high monodispersity were synthesized by employing monodisperse poly(styrene-

The titania nanoparticles coated on the PSMAA spheres were first re-dispersed in the mixed solvent and subsequently infiltrated into the swollen PSMAA spheres. After calcinations to remove completely PSMAA, monodisperse mesoporous titania spheres were obtained, displaying an average particle size of about 130 nm and a pore size distribution centered around 4 nm.

The present method of delocalizing anion charges in triazolate-based ionic liquids by means of cyano substitutions may be applicable to other ionic liquids to reduce their viscosity, thus making them promising reactive media and electrolytes.

Dynamic solution structure of a three-phase interface (oil/water/solid) of a bicontinuous microemulsion (BME) was evaluated electrochemically with apparent diffusion coefficients (
Dapp’s) from cyclic voltammograms. With hydrophilic (ITO) and lipophilic (pyrolytic graphite) electrodes,
Dapp’s were much smaller than with an amphiphilic (Au) electrode. The
Dapp ratios of ITO:PG-b in the BME were larger than those in a homogeneous aqueous solution. These results indicate that BME solution structures around hydrophilic and lipophilic electrodes adopt alternately layered structures but not simple sloped structures.

The graft density of poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] (PPEGMA) was controlled using atom transfer radical polymerization to observe the change in the differentiation behavior of stem cells because the alteration in the graft density leads to the altered surface elasticity. However, since the cells do not adhere on the high graft density polymer brush, it is impossible to observe such behavior directly. We therefore immobilized collagen onto polymer brushs with controlled graft density to obtain a surface which is effective for cell adhesion and maintains its different surface matrix elasticity. For the cell adhesion, the human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) adhesion and differentiation was investigated on the surface of collagen-immobilized polymer brush. It was shown that the hMSC spreading tendency was altered by the surface elasticity implying that the behavior of hMSC would be altered by the stiffness of the polymer brush.

Reduction-sensitive nanogels with a large swelling capacity were successfully prepared by the crosslinking reaction of biodegradable polymers in water, followed by the insolubilization of the polymers with the gradual addition of ethanol. The obtained nanogels were ca. 200–300 nm in diameter, and had a high water content, over 99%. Moreover, these nanogels were easily decomposed by the cleavage of the disulfide crosslinkages to their thiol groups using a reductant. These biocompatible and biodegradable nanogels prepared without toxic surfactants will be useful as novel carriers for drug delivery systems.
