We report a simple method that allows facile evaluation of the driving force required to move a droplet settled on a boundary of two surfaces with different surface energies. In the method, a vertically placed sample substrate holding a droplet is gradually recovered to the horizontal state, so that the driving force of the self-directed movement can be obtained from the counterbalancing gravitational force exerted on the droplet at the critical tilt angle at which the droplet starts to move.

Palladium-catalyzed cycloaddition of alkynyl aryl ethers with isocyanates proceeds through
o-C–H activation to afford 2-methylidene-2

o-hydrogen is cleaved selectively and migrated to 2-methylidene moiety in the product. Various substrates are applied to this transformation to afford various substituted cycloadducts. 1,4-Bis(alkynoxy)benzenes can be used for the synthesis of multicondensed cycles to afford benzo[1,2-

3/carbon composite cathode material has been synthesized by using a ball-milling and postannealing method. The LiMnBO

3/C cathode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, deliver a high discharge capacity of 209.3 mA h g

The sodium sulfite reagent provides the colorless reductant in combination with stoichiometric amounts of carboxylic acid and enables the formation of anilides from nitroarenes without any additives in good to excellent yields with high purities and simple work-up. Furthermore, this protocol provides a novel and complementary access to some industrially important chemicals in kilogram scale under mild conditions.

A carboxy tetraphenylporphyrin derivative formed aggregate by decreasing its pH, and suppressed its fluorescence and sensitization of singlet oxygen. This indicates that ON/OFF switching of the photosensitization can be achieved by aggregation and disaggregation of photosensitizers. To induce disaggregation, ultrasound was applied to the solution of the aggregate of photosensitizers, and disaggregation was confirmed by studying the fluorescence of the photosensitizer and phosphorescence of singlet oxygen sensitized. Thus this system works as a sono-activatable photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy.

This paper highlights a strategy on how totally ligand-free biocompatible gold submicrometer spheres (Au-SMSs) can be synthesized by aggregating laser-fabricated nanoparticles (NPs) with NaCl followed by subsequent post-irradiation using pulsed lasers at a moderate fluence. Interestingly, we observed significant changes in the surface structure of the SMSs, caused by the adsorption of smaller particles following a disaggregation–melting–redeposition–sintering-mechanism. Here, utilization of low fluences yielded perfectly smooth textures while higher fluences lead to wrinkled textures. Furthermore, we elucidate that prior to aggregation, the particle size distribution of the source AuNPs may significantly interfere with the surface texture of the resulting Au-SMSs, indicated by predominant formation of rough surface structures in the presence of smaller source NPs. These findings may highlight novel synthesis strategies for Au-SMSs with rough surface textures, particularly beneficial for SERS applications.

Double-wall TiO
2 nanotube arrays were prepared using an anodization method in a glycerol-containing electrolyte. In situ TEM observation of these samples at high temperature was carried out with and without oxygen injections. With oxygen injection, an improved thermal stability of the nanotubes at high temperature was observed. It may provide more detailed information about the calcination process of TiO
2 nanotubes and assist its morphology and structure modulation.

In order to design sustainable materials from vegetable oil-based fatty acids, we propose herewith a method to obtain unsaturated dicarboxylic acids as a polymerizable monomer through metathesis reaction of oleic and linoleic acids with the 2nd generation Grubbs catalyst. Subsequently, functional green polyester was produced from dicarboxylic acids and aromatic diol. Dicarboxylic acid having similar structure i.e., octadec-9-enedioic acid was successfully obtained from metathesis of both oleic and linoleic acids. Condensation polymerization of octadec-9-enedioic acid with 1,6-hexanediol and 4,4′-biphenol was carried out and it was shown that polymer with aromatic backbone had higher glass-transition temperature than aliphatic polyester.

We present
47/49Ti stationary NMR spectra of TiO
2 produced in Canada, Australia, and India, acquired at 21.8 T, demonstrating that solid-state
47/49Ti NMR potentially enables one to distinguish the production areas of TiO
2.
