This research was carried out to determine which type of headgear was the most effective in giving protection from solar radiation.

Five kinds of headgear were tested.

      1. white ultrathin organdy cloth

      2. black ultrathin organdy cloth

      3. white pique hat

      4. straw hat

      5. helmet

The suitability of these hats were tested by examining the relationship between their optimal characteristics (reflectivity, transmittance and heat absorption) and thermal physiology.

The results proved that headgear which had high reflectivity, low heat transmittance, low heat absorption, moderate air-permeability and did not adhere closely to the head was the type of headgear which was comfortable, shaded radiant heat and did not become hot and stuffy.

From the headgear tested it was verified that the straw hat was the optimum headgear.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects which the yarn density, the twist number, the fabric structure and the mechanical properties exert shrinkage properties in fabric for men's summer suit.

The results are as follows :

    1) In the plain fabrics, the values of shrinkage on the press, the humidification, the relaxation and the hygral expansion are closely related with one another. Especially, the values of press shrinkage is closely related to that of hygral expansion. In the twill fabrics, the same tendency is recognized.

    2) The values of press shrinkage are correlated with the yarn density and the twist number in the warp direction of plain fabrics.

    3) The values of press shrinkage are closely correlated with the tensile, the bending and the shear properties, and not with the compression and the surface properties in the warp direction of plain fabrics.

    4) The equations which are made to predict the values of shrinkage are useful for the hygral expansion, the humid shrinkage and the press shrinkage. Especially, that equation of the press shrinkage is very useful in weft direction.
